SPOILER ALERT: The following story reveals major plot points from tonight’s episode of CBS‘ Elsbeth.

EXCLUSIVE: Shocking news for Elsbeth fans on tonight’s episode, “I’ve Got A Little List.” Carra Patterson, who has played NYPD Officer Kaya Blanke since Season 1, has been promoted to undercover agent, as Patterson has decided to step back from series regular duties. Patterson will return in Season 3 as a guest star, to continue indefinitely.

“My character, Kaya Blanke, is embarking on a new adventure as the story continues to unfold, and I am excited to do the same. But we will see Kaya again – fans will find out what she’s been up to in her new role as ‘Detective’ next season when I come back to guest star and play with Carrie and Wendell.  I am beyond grateful to the cast, crew, and producers, and of course, the fans, for all the love and support,” shared Patterson in a statement to Deadline.

In the shocking scene, Captain Wagner tells Carra, “You are joining a special task force in DC. A spot just opened up. Training starts right away. It will require extensive training in DC and undercover assignments.”

Kaya was stunned to hear the news because she had not applied for the position. Wagner had put her up for the promotion, knowing she would be perfect for it.

Executive producer Jonathan Tolins spoke to Deadline about the surprising development. “Kaya just turned out to be this wonderful partner for Elsbeth, and that relationship was one that we all love so much, and we love Carra,” he said. “We’re excited that the character got her promotion and achieved that dream. She’s not leaving the world of the show. She’s just not going to be with us every day. I don’t want to make too much of the change.”

More from our Q&A with Tolins can be found here.

Patterson will appear again in the Season 2 finale “Ramen Holiday,” where fans will see the conclusion of her work as an officer at the NYPD. There will be speeches and toasts yet to be had, as well as a magical musical number featuring many prior guests from various seasons.
