DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — Whether it’s the book, the movie, or in this case, the play, many are familiar with To Kill a Mockingbird.
It’s a classic story rooted in history right here in Alabama and packed with lessons we could all use a reminder on, even today.
“It has issues that were relevant in 1935 when it was set, 1960 when it was produced and published, and now in 2025,” said show producer Melissa Mcmahan. “So, we think it’s a great choice for this time and this place, and we’re thrilled that more people can see it.”
It’s a show that has been in the works for over a year.
“For everything that you see on stage, there’s stuff going on backstage that a lot of people don’t realize that’s part of making the magic of it,” she said.
Before they kick off the weekend, the cast gets to perform for students in their school shows.
“Just get to experience something that they really realistically just may not get the opportunity to do otherwise… and again, I think the story is too important to not be told to so many people who are growing up right here now in this, this generation, when, again, this is a very relevant topic, even for them,” Jonathan Schuster said.
Schuter plays Atticus Finch, and for him, Thursday was a unique opportunity. He’s an AP English teacher at Brewer High School and got to perform for his students today.
“It’s very special,” he said. “It will be the first time this has ever happened. I’ve done theater for a long time, but I’ve never had this opportunity, and I am really looking forward to it.”
Melissa said putting together a staple like this brings a lot of pressure, but she hopes their hard work and Harper Lee’s message shine through.
“As Atticus says, you don’t truly understand a person till you walk in their shoes. And this is one step towards that,” she said.
News 19’s Greg Screws is also a part of the production! He plays the Sheriff, Heck Tate.
If you would like to see Greg or any of the other talented crew members, the show will be in the Princess Theater all weekend. You can see the show Friday and Saturday at 7 p..m, or Sunday at 2 p.m. You can find tickets here.
