A video of a sad dog looking defeated during an adoption event at the rescue center shattered people’s hearts.
Hope for Life Rescue recently hosted an adoption event in their Virginia Beach location. The line went out the door as many of their puppies found forever homes; however, dogs like Daisy, who have a “little extra baggage,” didn’t get the same happy ending.
A representative from the animal rescue told Newsweek via Instagram that Daisy came from a shelter in Honduras that was shutting down. She came to them with scars after being attacked by a group of dogs. Many believed she wouldn’t survive her horrific injuries, but with medical care, she healed and made her way to Virginia Beach.
“Since then, she’s had a few more hurdles,” the representative said. “We found out she had a botched spay from her time in Honduras; she still had an ovary left behind, which eventually developed a cyst that needed surgery. Later, she cracked a canine tooth and had to have that removed too, which is no small thing.”
Despite everything, Daisy always bounces back and is a happy dog, but sadness overtook her spirit when no one gave her the time of day during the adoption event. The animal rescue shared how defeated Daisy looked in a March 9 Instagram video posted to the account @hopeforliferescue.
Daisy lay on her bed with her head between her paws. Defeated, she looked out into the rescue center’s lobby at all the potential adopters who did not show her any interest.
Since the adoption event, a staff member brought her in as a foster dog. They’ve learned Daisy is playful and incredibly food-motivated. She’s good with cats and can be around calm, respectful dogs if they receive a proper introduction.
The representative said Daisy can still be wary of strangers, especially if a person reaches out too quickly. She isn’t the type of dog to run up and greet people, which is one of the reasons why the rescue organization believes she’s been overlooked.
“…But once she trusts you, she’s a total sweetheart,” the person said. “We’ve had a trainer evaluate her, and he said she’s absolutely trainable and that she just needs someone willing to work with her and give her time.”
Those interested in adopting Daisy or another available animal can visit the Hope for Life Rescue website for more information and to fill out an application.
Instagram viewers flooded the video with hope that Daisy’s adoption will come soon. The clip amassed over 2.8 million views as of Wednesday.
“Sweet Daisy will find her family. Sending hugs and kisses!” wrote one person.
Another added: “Oh, sweet Daisy! She just needs a little extra loving!”
A third user commented: “People are really missing out when they don’t adopt older dogs or dogs are so sweet. They’re calm. They’re more like that, and they really need snuggles and love.”
