A suspect has been arrested after a man was found shot to death in Long Beach.
The suspect was identified as Malik Cooper, 24, of Compton, the Long Beach Police Department announced Tuesday.
On March 17, Long Beach police responded to an assault with a deadly weapon on the 5400 block of Atlantic Avenue at around 3:49 a.m.
Arriving officers found Alejandro Calderon, 52, of Hawthorne, with a gunshot wound to his upper body. He was transported to the hospital where he later died from his injuries.
The gunman had fled the scene before police arrived. As detectives investigated the case, they later identified Cooper as the primary suspect.
On April 28, Cooper was arrested during a traffic stop in Compton. He was booked for murder and is being held on $2 million bail.
It’s unclear how Cooper and the victim were known to each other. The motive behind the shooting death remains under investigation.
Detectives will present this case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration.
