TOWN CREEK, Ala. (WHNT) — John Daniel Scott Jr. was laid to rest on Wednesday.
Hundreds of families and friends filled the Jackson Memory Funeral Home in Town Creek to pay tribute to a man whom they call the gentle giant.
Scott died at Huntsville Hospital one week ago after a call regarding his mental health.
Scott’s refusal of the officers’ suggestions to go to the hospital ended with a violent arrest.
After being booked into the Morgan County jail, he was later taken to a hospital and died.
But what was most on the minds of the well-wishers was how something like this could happen to someone who called law enforcement for help.
His family said that they all understood that Scott struggled with his mental health and are asking for continued prayers, while the family seeks justice for his death.
“He was a very good man and so many of us loved him,” said longtime friend London Palladino. “He was family, and I just want people to understand that he was someone special and he mattered, and the truth matters.”
Linda Taylor of Decatur, Scott’s aunt, spoke to News 19 after the service, asking for continued prayers while the family seeks justice for his death.
“We need your prayers and any justice that you could provide to get justice for LJ,” said Taylor. “We would like to say thanks to everyone that’s reached out to us and helped us and continues to help us.”
The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the death of John Daniel Scott Jr.
