Is imitation the sincerest form of flattery?
Hailey Bieber was dragged by fans for seemingly copying one of Selena Gomez’s past speeches nearly word for word.
Last Thursday, the Rhode Skin founder — who is married to Gomez’s ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber — gave a speech when she took the stage to accept the award for Beauty Innovator at the Daily Front Row’s 9th Annual Fashion Awards.
“When I started Rhode, I didn’t want to start a brand for the sake of starting a brand. I really wanted to create an entire world,” she said, in part, according to a video shared by Access Hollywood.
That line in Hailey’s speech was nearly verbatim to what Gomez said in a statement from her interview with Spécial Madame Figaro Arabia in 2021.
“I didn’t want to launch a makeup line for the sake to launch a brand. What interests me is cultivating beauty from the inside,” the “Only Murders in the Building” actress said at the time.
“The idea was to tell those who would buy Rare Beauty products: you are beautiful, you are special and here is a place where you can try different things on your lashes, lips, and eyelids … with a big range of colors,” she added.
A fan shared a side-by-side image of their speeches on TikTok and fans took to the comments section of the post to express their opinions about the alleged copying.
“she copies everything,” claimed one user.
“creepy stalker copycat,” added another.
“I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: Once is an accident, twice is a coincidence, three times is a pattern,” wrote a third netizen.
“At this point she does it on purpose cause without selena’s name, her and her husband would be forgotten. He been flopping ever since he for married,” commented a fourth fan.
Other social media users defended Hailey’s similar speech.
“And MANY other celebrities use this line, a they want to make it clear they did nor want to make just another ‘celebrity company’ but wanted to make a real business,” claimed one person.
“It’s almost as if… they’re both given speeches/told what to say by their PR team… not to mention that’s such a vague statement to make???” added another.
A third defender said: “I feel like everyone says this about their own business tho??”
Page Six has reached out to Hailey for comment but did not immediately hear back.
Hailey, 28, and Gomez, 32, have been pitted against each other over their romantic involvement with Justin.
The “Calm Down” singer dated the pop star, 31, on and off for nearly eight years before they broke up for good in 2018.
Hailey and Justin secretly tied the knot later that year.
In 2023, the mom of one posted a video with her pals Kendall Jenner and Justine Skye, in which the trio mouthed: “I’m not saying she deserved it, but God’s timing is always right.”
Gomez’s fans believed the video was aimed at the Disney star, who had been body shamed by trolls earlier that week.
That February, fans accused Hailey of copying Gomez by getting a cursive “G” tattooed behind her ear like the actress.
Hailey eventually set the record straight, declaring it was “all love” between her and Gomez during her September 2022 “Call Her Daddy” interview.
Two months later, the women posed for a photo together.
