FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) — The City of Florence has announced a grand re-opening of the W.C. Handy Recreation Center.
The $2.6 million project, approved by the City Council, includes extensive renovations to the interior, new HVAC and plumbing systems, a larger kitchen, new activity rooms, computer space, tutoring space, and the complete repurposing of the former locker room space.
According to city officials, updates were also made to the exterior of the building as well as landscaping.
“This center means so much to the residents of District 1 and the entire City of Florence. I am honored to see this vision come full circle. We now have a facility that truly welcomes everyone, from young children to seniors, offering programs and space that meet real community needs,” said City Council President Kaytrina Simmons.
“Investing in the Handy Recreation Center is an investment in the future of Florence. This facility will be a hub for learning, health, and community connection. I thank the City Council and staff who worked diligently to bring this project to life,” said City of Florence Mayor Andy Betterton.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be hosted on Friday, May 23 from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., followed by a grand opening and facility tour from 1 p.m. until 4:30 p.m.
The W.C. Handy Recreation Center will be located at 1105 Beale Street, Florence, AL.
