Among the different bang styles, micro bangs stand out as one of the boldest for your face shape. Also known as Hepburn bangs, micro bangs were popularized by the Hollywood icon Audrey Hepburn who famously wore short choppy fringe in films and on red carpets. Amy Abramite, creative director and stylist at Chicago’s Maxine Salon, also notes that the look was worn by ’90s supermodels like Naomi Campbell, Helena Christensen, Kate Moss, and Claudia Schiffer.
“This look is definitely a nod to classic Hollywood Hepburn, delivered with a ’90s supermodel nostalgia,” says Abramite, adding that the look can also be swept to the side.
The enduring influence of micro bangs is still going strong in 2025, with everyone from Zendaya, Miley Cyrus, Florence Pugh, and Zoë Kravitz wearing the style on the red carpet and beyond. Ready to get in on this vintage hair look? Ahead, everything you need to know about micro bangs, according to professional hairstylists.
What are micro bangs?
These aren’t your typical bangs. “Micro bangs have an airier appearance: They are lighter and layered and texturized for weight removal,” says Abramite. “Bangs in the 2000s and 2010s were thicker, longer, and solid for a blunter look.”
Hairstylist Dan Williams adds that one of the biggest pros of micro bangs is they require less maintenance than regular bangs, since grow out is smoother. “They add fullness with a lot of playful movement that’s suitable for most hairstyles,” he says. “These bangs even look chic if you’ve missed your three to four-week maintenance trim appointment, since they’re much shorter in nature.”
To get micro bangs, Abramite recommends telling your stylist you’d like a choppy, “half-moon” style bang, or “mini choppy bangs.”
What face shape looks best with micro bangs?
Williams recommends micro bangs for people with diamond, oval, and square faces. “Micro bangs are definitely not for everyone, but they’re most suitable for square faces, as they enhance and work together with their facial structure,” he says.
When it comes to hair texture, micro bangs also look great on curly girls. Toni Garcia-Jackson, a Clairol Professional top artist, points out that texture works to your advantage when styling. “When a curly girl wants to change up her look in a dramatic but not so dramatic way, bangs are the way to go. Micro bangs will give a curly girl a trendy, fashion forward look. Also, a curly fringe allows women to keep the length intact while still giving style versatility.”
Micro bangs maintenance
As Williams mentioned, micro bangs can be lower maintenance, since they are cut shorter than regular bangs and have more room to grow out. That being said, if you want your bangs looking fresh, you’ll want to visit the salon about every four to six weeks.
How to style micro bangs
Like most bangs, micro bangs require a degree of styling to get the desired look. According to Kacey Welch, celebrity hairstylist and founder of the Kacey Welch method, most micro bangs require a blowout after washing. “Bangs need to go from wet to dry immediately after the shower,” she says, adding that you should always apply heat protectant beforehand. Using a blow dryer and round brush or blow dryer brush, dry your bangs flat for a sleek and shiny look. If you want some piecey texture, hit them with texturizing spray or paste afterwards.
