Nearly half of Americans are skeptical about the US president’s priorities over his first 100 days in office, according to a new poll.
President Donald Trump will mark 100 days since taking office on April 30, a period that has been overshadowed by uncertainty due to his administration’s trade and immigration policies.
The poll was published this weekend by the Associated Press Norc Center for Public Affairs Research.
About half of those surveyed think Trump has been a poor or terrible president so far in his second term, about 2 in 10 view his presidency as average, and 3 in 10 think it has been great or good, according to the poll.
No consensus over Trump’s priorities
Some 44% American adults said Trump had focused on the wrong priorities in the first 100 days of his second term, while 24% believe he is on point when it came to his priorities. About 2 in 10 people said the US president’s priorities are an even mix of right and wrong.
Democrats particularly unhappy with Trump’s first 100 days
Unsurprisingly, Democrats were unhappier with the Republican president’s second term than before he took office on January 20, the survey revealed. About 75% of Democrats say that Trump is paying attention to the wrong topics.
The poll showed that Republicans seem to be broadly happy with Trump. But it also highlighted some uncertainty within his party’s ranks when it came to areas the US president has chosen to focus on, with 26% of Republicans believing that Trump’s priorities are an even mix.
Immigration has continued to be among one Trump’s strongest policy concerns, the survey said, adding that he had higher approval in that area compared to other issues like trade, the economy and foreign policy.
Trump’s approval ratings low on economy, immigration
Multiple pollsters this week pointed to declining approval ratings for Trump, especially on and .
For instance, a New York Times/Siena College poll on Friday showed that half of registered voters saw Trump as “exceeding” the powers available to him. The poll gave Trump an approval rating of 42%, while 54% voters disapproved of his job performance.
Some 66% of people who took part in the poll described the two-time president’s latest term as “chaotic” and 59% deemed it “scary.” Meanwhile, 42% of voters thought Trump’s first 100 days have been “exciting.”
