The Toronto Blue Jays have one of the better rosters in the American League, but they play in the loaded AL East with the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. With this loaded division, the Blue Jays could fall out of contention quite easily this season.

David Schoenfield of ESPN recently predicted the Blue Jays would cut ties with starting pitcher Chris Bassitt if they happen to fall out of contention this season.

“In the Blue Jays’ case, things would really have to go sour for them to surrender at the trade deadline, but they do have two interesting would-be free agents in Bassitt (off to a tremendous start with a 0.77 ERA through four outings) and Bichette (hitting for average but not any power),” Schoenfield wrote. “Even if the Blue Jays are a few games back at the deadline, they’ll probably look to make additions — especially keeping in mind that the jobs of executives Mark Shapiro and Ross Atkins, let alone manager John Schneider, are possibly on the line.”

Bassitt has been tremendous this season for Toronto. The veteran righty is in the final year of his three-year contract. If Toronto falls out of contention, it would make sense to trade an expiring veteran like Bassitt, especially considering how well he’s pitching.

The Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers and a few other top teams could make sense as a suitor for Bassitt. If the Blue Jays opt to trade him, they will likely be able to land a pretty decent prospect haul in return.
