Miley Cyrus, the innovator.
Shortly after making the case for micro bangs and a wavy shag, Cyrus is set to rehabilitate another controversial trend: the useless belt. On April 23, the 32-year-old pop star stepped out in New York City wearing a quintessentially New York ‘fit, complete with a black turtleneck maxi dress, patent leather pumps, and a pair of oversized black sunglasses.
Instead of breaking up the look with a leather jacket or another source of intrigue, Cyrus’s look was completed with a black skinny belt hung loosely at her hip, instantly transporting us back to a time when belts of various sizes were layered haphazardly over dresses or outside of belt loops as if to say a big “F-U” to utilitarianism.
However, she managed to find unexpected use for the so-called “useless belt.” According to Cyrus’ longtime stylist’s Bradley Kenneth Instagram story, the 32-year-old singer wore the opening look from Coperni’s fall 2025-2026 collection.
While the dress may seem like an understated look from the Parisian luxury brand at first glance, the smallest of details can sometimes make the biggest impact.
In this case, the sleeveless turtleneck design is topped off with a thin black belt featuring an added strip of leather that holds up the dress’ dramatic thigh-slit.
Like many a controversial Y2K trend, the useless hip belt has made its way back into the sartorial zeitgeist with trendsetters like Emily Ratajkowski and Dua Lipa reviving the aesthetic in recent seasons. Of course, Miley Cyrus is not one to live and die by a trend cycle and made found a way to disrupt the useless belt revival by giving it an actual job—just not one you might expect.
Now that’s rock n’ roll.
