Watch out Knives Out 3! Another Netflix murder mystery film, The Thursday Murder Club, is in the works from Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and Netflix, based on a book by BBC game show host and British TV presenter Richard Osman.

The cast was stacked from the start, and production on the film was set to start in June of 2024. Osman confirmed the news of the film’s development on his podcast The Rest Is Entertainment in April 2024.

When does The Thursday Murder Club movie come out?

The film will arrive August 28 on Netflix.

Is The Thursday Murder Club in production?

Production ran from June to September 2024.

What is The Thursday Murder Club about?

Based on the novel by Osman, the story traces a group of old friends who solve murders for fun at their retirement home only to find themselves with a real case on their hands. The core group of four friends have to sift through the suspects to find out who committed the crime.

Osman has three more books in the series — The Man Who Died Twice, The Bullet That Missed, and The Last Devil to Die.

Who will be in The Thursday Murder Club Movie?

Pierce Brosnan will play former union activist Ron, Helen Mirren will play ex-spy Elizabeth, Kingsley will play Ibrahim, an ex-psychiatrist and Celia Imrie will portray the fourth member of the club — Joyce, an ex-nurse. Mirren, Brosnan and Kingsley’s castings were announced before Imrie boarded the project.

The next round of castings revealed that Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes), Henry Lloyd-Hughes (We Were the Lucky Ones, Killing Eve), Naomi Ackie (Blink Twice, Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody), Daniel Mays (Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget) and David Tennant (Doctor Who) would join the film.

Last but not least, Tom Ellis (Lucifer), Ingrid Oliver (Doctor Who), Sarah Niles (Ted Lasso), Paul Freeman (Raiders of the Lost Ark) and Richard E. Grant Withnail & I) boarded the project in July 2024.

Who is directing The Thursday Murder Club movie?

Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, and the first two Harry Potter films) will direct and adapt the best-selling book.

Who else is behind The Thursday Murder Club movie?

Steven Spielberg bought the rights to adapt the book from Osman in September 2020. His Amblin Entertainment production company has a partnership with Netflix, and the streamer joined the deal package soon after it was first announced.
