The latest Dior capsule from Lewis Hamilton explores themes of Afrofuturism. WWD was first to report on the new release. The partnership between the French luxury house and the F1 champion was announced last summer, with the first campaign debuting in October 2024.
Following his trip to Morocco, Senegal, Mozambique, Benin and Madagascar last summer, Hamilton was inspired by the sights and culture across Africa. In a statement shared with WWD he said, “I heard so many incredible stories that inspired me to imagine the future of Black culture. The way we tell stories through art, science and philosophy is really special. Seeing these ideas brought to life through color and movement inspired me.” The “afrofuturism” theme links to science fiction and manifestations of the afrofuturist aesthetic in pop culture over the past decade.
Dior shared a statement on Hamilton’s latest capsule, sharing that the collection is “reflecting once more an alternative side to his sporting life and revealing something more personal.” The brand added, “This capsule celebrates performance, excellence and innovation, while demonstrating virtuoso accomplishments in terms of sustainability. Hamilton has engaged in a dialogue with the Dior ateliers to summon a unique collection by striking the right balance between the power and energy of motorsports and the exceptional finesse of French and international savoir-faire.”
The collection features a striking leopard-print tweed used for relaxed shorts, shirt, hooded jacket and a bouson. The print exemplifies “where afrofuturism and Dior historicism ultimately meet,” according to the brand.” Hamilton’s eclectic styling sees roomy tailoring juxtaposed with workwear boots and a bucket hat. Hamilton, who is the next Met Gala co-chair sees fashion as “self-expression and embracing all the different parts of yourself. Being authentic to your style and communicating yourself through clothing is such a powerful feeling,” he said. “That’s what this collection embraces — an exploration of identity, versatility and expression.”
