Dozens have confirmed their attendance for Pope Francis’s funeral, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, April 26, at 10 a.m. on the parvis of St. Peter’s Basilica.
It has been 20 years since the world witnessed a papal funeral service. During Pope John Paul II’s funeral on Friday, April 8, 2005, the front row was reserved for Italian and Polish authorities (as the pontiff hailed from Poland), who were also able to bring more representatives than the other delegations, 200 official ones from around the world with heads of state and government, kings and queens, ministers.
During that service, dignitaries were arranged in alphabetical order, according to the country’s French nomenclature and ordered according to diplomatic protocols.
Here is who is slated to attend Pope Francis’s funeral:
Italy
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has canceled international engagements scheduled for the weekend in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan in order to attend the late Pope’s funeral on Saturday.
President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, who has already paid his respects to the pope at Santa Marta will also attend.
Europe
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky all plan to be present, according to Le Figaro. President of Russia Vladimir Putin has not announced intentions to attend the funeral.
The United States and the Rest of the World
Among the first to confirm attendance at the funeral was President of the United States Donald Trump with his wife, Melania. Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, accompanied by his wife Janja, will also be in attendance. Lula had also attended the funeral of John Paul II.
Royal Families
Official confirmations are forthcoming, but there is no doubt about the participation of royal families from Catholic countries from Spain to the principality of Monaco, but also that of representatives of the British royal family given the recent visit of King Charles and Queen Camilla to Pope Francis. All sent messages of condolence.
