PHOENIX – Voters in two West Valley cities will soon receive mail ballots for upcoming special elections, including one regarding the massive VAI Resort project.

Ballots for the all-mail elections will be sent automatically to every eligible voter in Goodyear and Glendale on Monday, which is also the last day for residents of those cities to register for the jurisdictional elections.

Federal-only voters are not eligible unless they provide the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office with documented proof of citizenship by Election Day on May 20.

Ballots must be received by 7 p.m. on Election Day to count. Officials say voters should get their completed ballots in the mail by May 13 to ensure they arrive on time.

May 9 is the last day to request a replacement ballot.

VAI Resort measures on ballot in Glendale

The Glendale election covers two ballot initiatives related to the $1 billion VAI Resort. The 1,100-room hotel within a 60-acre entertainment complex is expected to open later this year after multiple delays.

If passed, Propositions 401 and 402 would uphold general plan and zoning changes that were previously approved by the Glendale City Council.

Mayor Jerry Weiers and Maricopa County Supervisor Debbie Lesko are among the local officials urging voters to pass the measures.

“The VAI Resort project represents our city’s next step forward,” Weiers said in a press release earlier this month. “This development will strengthen our economy, provide thousands of jobs and increase city revenues to improve police, fire, infrastructure and more. The zoning amendments are necessary for the project’s success.”

A group called Worker Power, which helped block a proposed Arizona Coyotes arena project in Tempe, leading to the team’s departure from the state, opposes the measures.

Meanwhile, Goodyear voters will have six questions on their ballots, four regarding city charter changes and two about utility franchise agreements.
