The reboot of Fyre Festival, eight years after the first event made international headlines for its failure, has been highly anticipated ever since organiser Billy McFarland announced tickets were going on sale.

The founding Fyre Festival in 2017 became a globally derided debacle, inspired a Netflix documentary and resulted in McFarland going to jail for fraud.

In 2018 McFarland was sentenced to six years in jail for wire fraud, and ordered to return $29m to investors. He was released in 2022 and, soon after, announced Fyre Festival 2 was on the way.

Now ABC News reports that organisers are looking for a new location, with scheduled dates also uncertain. This follows confusion whereby two different announced locations in Mexico were found not to have event permits.

Watch on Deadline

The broadcaster reports that ticket holders – who paid between $1,400 and £1.1million for their place at festival were sent a message to say both new location and date would be forthcoming.

The update said: “We are vetting new locations and will announce our host destination soon. Our priorities remain unchanged: delivering an unforgettable, safe, and transparent experience.”

NBC and The New York Times later reported organisers asserting Fyre Festival 2 was “still on,” while McFarland reportedly told NBC the date was dependent on location.

The original Fyre Festival in 2017 was promoted as an exclusive festival event for the rich and famous on the island of Great Huma in the Bahamas, but fell into disarray with booked talent cancelled, a storm destroying accommodation and food on site found to be inadequate.
