MADISON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — After a fire tore through Mary’s Pit BBQ in the early hours of Jan. 24, the owners have decided to demolish the building.
The announcement was made on the restaurant’s Facebook account on April 16. According to the owners, after receiving the fire report, they were able to begin working with their insurance company.
However, due to the building’s age, the owners said the insurance coverage could not fund a full rebuild. Despite this, the owners remain hopeful of getting a new building. The owners said the demolition of the old building is expected to begin in the coming weeks.
“It’s incredibly sad for all of us, but unfortunately, there just isn’t much left that can be salvaged,” the owners said.
The fire began just after 3 a.m. on Jan. 24. According to the owners, early indications suggested that the fire may have been caused by a space heater or an electrical issue in one of the front rooms.
A GoFundMe was created by the family, which raised over $16,000. On Jan. 26, Siniard Law said it was assisting with the rebuilding of the community staple and would match contributions up to $5,000 to kickstart the fundraising.
The owners expressed their gratitude for the support they have received over this time and plan to provide regular updates.
“It’s been a rough and incredibly busy couple of months, but we’re still here, taking things one step at a time,” the owners said.
