In the first one, the strategy relies on an “operation nostalgia” approach, designed to win back longtime fans with heroes who’ve already had their moment of glory. In the second—our focus here—the plan revolves around reviving a classic and recognizable villain from the comics.
The Threat of Galactus in The Fantastic Four: First Steps
The new trailer opens with the line: “Four brave astronauts head up into space and come back forever changed.” This way, The Fantastic Four: First Steps introduces the characters already in their heroic phase, set in a sleek, retro-futuristic world that at first feels full of optimism—until things quickly go wrong.
Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), his wife Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), younger brother Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn), and friend Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) are enjoying relative peace, especially following the news of Reed and Storm’s first child. But a threat from space arrives without warning, putting the entire planet at risk.

Galactus, the devourer of worlds, now has Earth in his sights. His herald, the Silver Surfer—played by Julia Garner—delivers a chilling warning. “Are we safe?” a reporter asks the Fantastic Four. Reed replies with a strained, “I don’t know.” Later, however, he assures the public that they’ll do everything they can to protect the planet.
The threat of Galactus is so immense that even the heroes question whether they can stop it. Reed’s guilt over pushing the boundaries of space—and perhaps triggering the arrival of this cosmic force—only adds to the tension.
Before their official MCU debut, the Fantastic Four were the subject of a 1994 film that was never released. A decade later, they hit the big screen in 2005 with Fantastic Four, directed by Tim Story and starring Chris Evans, Jessica Alba, Ioan Gruffudd, and Michael Chiklis. While not a critical favorite, the film did well at the box office and spawned a sequel in 2007.
The story returned in 2015 with a new cast—Miles Teller, Kate Mara, Michael B. Jordan, and Jamie Bell—but this time, neither critics nor audiences were impressed. Now, all eyes are on the upcoming installment, which promises to restore the team’s legacy and help Marvel regain its momentum.
Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps arrives in theaters July 25.
