HAZEL GREEN, Ala. (WHNT) — Pretty soon, the southside of Hazel Green High School will get a brand new look. The Madison County School System says it is moving forward with a 20,000 square foot addition to the campus.
The Madison County Board of Education approved the winning bid for the project at a meeting earlier this month. It’s expected to cost around $7.5 million.
News 19 spoke to the Director of Operations for the Madison County School System, Joseph Cuzzort to learn more about it.
“It’s 12 classrooms to help with the growth that we have here in Hazel Green,” Cuzzort said.
Along with 12 new classrooms, the one-story addition will add new bathrooms, a teacher workroom, and some storage space.
Cuzzort said they will also be making some campus security upgrades and adding a tornado shelter for students.
“It should, by code, withstand an EF 5 tornado,” he added.
Since the 2022 school year, Cuzzort said Hazel Green High School has enrolled more than 150 additional students. He said while space is not currently an issue at the school, the school system is planning for additional growth.
“It just gives us more capacity,” he said. “We’re building a little more than we need and that is for the future growth here as well.”
Cuzzort told News 19 that he expects construction to start sometime in the next month. He estimates that the 20,000 square foot addition will be ready for students by the start of the 2026-2027 school year.
