PHOENIX — Tempe residents recycled a record amount of waste last year, according to city officials.
Residents used the city’s yearly Zero Waste events, as well as Tempe’s Household Products Collection Center (HPCC), to recycle 463,628 pounds of waste. HPCC has helped residents safely dispose over 7.4 million pounds of hazardous waste since its opening in 1999.
“For reference, in 2023 the HPCC and Zero Waste day events recycled 394,200 pounds of waste,” Tempe spokesperson Maegan Pardue told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Monday. “In 2024, the HPCC and our Zero Waste Days collectively recycled more waste than any other year since the HPCC’s opening in 1999.”
These recycling efforts saved hazardous waste, such as batteries, paints, poisons, aerosols and flammables, from landfills, according to Tempe environmental services manager Jeremy Mikus.
“Every item we accept is an item that is saved from impacting our landfills and potentially entering our local waterways,” Mikus said in a recent city announcement.

The HPCC is open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
The center at 1320 E. University Drive gives residents in both Tempe and Guadalupe the opportunity to responsibly drop off refuse that can’t go in trash, recycling or green waste bins.
“Tempe is proud to have helped residents recycle their household hazardous waste for over 25 years,” Mikus said. “Community members drive through our collection center with all kinds of items, from TVs to paint, and we are happy to take them off their hands for recycling or repurposing.”
The city’s Zero Waste events are another way for residents to dispose of hazardous waste and other hard-to-recycle materials. The next Zero Waste Day will take place on April 26 at Kiwanis Park.
Tempe and Guadalupe residents can use the day to dispose of hazardous waste, Styrofoam, furniture and paper. They can also shred documents and donate clothes.
