From The Hills to Got to Get Out, Spencer Pratt will always show his support for Heidi Montag. In the new Hulu competition show, Pratt — otherwise dubbed by Omarosa as the “diabolical Spencer Pratt” — mainly sported his wife’s tour merch during his 10-day stay in the Canadian mansion. According to the reality star, he would’ve packed even more “Heidi shirts” if he weren’t so focused on disguising himself for his many failed escape plans.
“The only reason I had anything different in the house, which now looking back I’m so upset, is I thought you had to sneak out in the night and need these outfits,” Pratt told DECIDER over a recent Zoom interview. “I should have never not worn a Heidi shirt.”
In the show, 20 contestants made up of celebrities and normies have to scheme their way out of a mansion for their chance to take home an ever-growing cash prize of up to $1 million. Pratt said the show was designed so that “if done right, you should be able to walk out the front door and walk to the car.” But in all eight episodes, only one pairing was able to successfully get past the gates — adventure filmmaker Stein Retzlaff and the mastermind behind his plan, Real Housewives of Atlanta star Cynthia Bailey.
“I should have kept that mindset when I was packing and just been like, I got my sunglasses, my Heidi shirt, and shorts,” Pratt said. “But instead, I’m dressed in these outfits thinking I’m gonna be crawling through bushes. And it’s so stupid that I fell for that.”
While Bailey and Retzlaff got to split a prize of $312,000 between the two of them, Pratt and the rest of the remaining contestants each took home about $43,000 — which Pratt, who was hoping to win “at least $100,000” by the end of the game, was still “upset” over when we talked to him.
“It felt like a failure, but at least I had fun,” he said. “It’s good memories. I was not like, ‘Yay!’ Because I was there to win $1 million.”
Pratt also told DECIDER how he chose to spend his winnings — and gave an update on the Got To Get Out showmance he “100%” would take credit for. Check out the full story below.
DECIDER: I’m so excited about you being on this show. Before we get into everything, everyone has been following your family’s journey following the California wildfires. How are you guys doing? What has the support of the fans and the world meant to you and Heidi?
SPENCER PRATT: The support is the only thing positive that has come out of this. Thank God. Otherwise, you know, I try to keep it together all day. It’s so horrific. To other people, it probably feels so long ago, but it was just three months ago, which feels like three days, but then it feels like three years and then it was like three centuries. So it’s the weirdest, weirdest feeling ever. Thank God for everyone supporting Heidi’s music and everything we got going on. I just focus on that. Because if you think about how horrible the situation is, it’s…
I’m so sorry about everything that happened. But I’m so happy to see her music resurging.
Thank God for that.
You and your wife Heidi Montag have famously done a lot of shows together. Aside from The Hills, you also competed on I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here and Celebrity Big Brother UK. What was her reaction to you doing Got To Get Out? Did any part of her want to do it with you since you guys have already done so many competition shows together?
We’ve always done all those shows together pre her being a mom. So I don’t think she would have left the kids for that many days, even if they wanted it. Whereas I can leave them and it was a lovely vacation. But yeah, she wanted me to win the million dollars. But then when I FaceTimed her, like, five nights in and I hadn’t slept, she was like, “You should come home. Like, this is not worth your health.” And I’m like, “No, I’m gonna win the money.”
You were like, “I got this.”
I got this. And she’s like, “Just come home.” She’s like, “You’re scaring me, you should sleep.”
Speaking of Heidi, I loved that you wore her merch for 99% of the show. I think Simu even referred to you as the president of the Heidi Montag fanclub at one point. Do you always travel around with a suitcase of your wife’s merch?
Oh, absolutely. That’s pretty much my only wardrobe and the only reason I had anything different in the house, which now looking back I’m so upset, is I thought you had to sneak out in the night and need these outfits. I should have never not worn a Heidi shirt. They said day one and I never believed them and now looking back, it’s obviously how they had the show designed, that if done right, you should be able to walk out the front door and walk to the car. So I should have kept that mindset when I was packing and just been like, I got my sunglasses, my Heidi shirt, and shorts. But instead I’m dressed in these outfits thinking I’m gonna be crawling through bushes. And it’s so stupid that I fell for that.
I thought you and Kim Zolciak had such a fun friendship/frenemy-ship on the show. What did you think of Kim? What was it like working with her?
Well, Heidi and I watched the OG [Real Housewives of Atlanta], like, way back in the day. So I was very aware of her personality. So I wasn’t affected by things that maybe would bother other people because I was like, “Oh, this is who she is.” So yeah, no, I enjoyed everyone in the house. I felt like they were all perfect for this show. It was great casting.
It really was! Everyone was so funny – especially when they were making jabs at each other.
Well, like, if you look at my phone right now, Trashcan Steve, his contact name is Trashcan Steve.
It seems your reputation preceded you a bit with some of your castmates. Steve H. called you a reality TV “villain” and Omarosa called you the “diabolical Spencer Pratt.” What is your response to these assessments?
Yeah, I mean, I’m glad anybody knows who I am. There were other people in the house who were like, “I thought he was a child star.” So I’d rather be known as a diabolical villain than like, “I think he’s a child star.”
As we know, Cynthia Bailey and Stein were the only two to successfully escape. What did you think of their win? Did it surprise you?
Yes, it did surprise me. The way they got out definitely surprised me. You know, you can’t be a poor sport about it but … I’m just going to be quiet on that one. It was good for them. I have to watch how it looks to have a real answer. From my perspective … I gotta watch it.
You were involved in a few different exit strategies – all of which, unfortunately, failed. Looking back, is there one failed plan that you’re still kicking yourself over? Is there anything you would’ve done differently?
Every day. Every day I think about any other human on Earth, besides Rashad, I don’t believe would have stood on those pillows for three hours with his eye in a little crack. And then also, I think, why did they leave that little crack when they were painting up the windows? Like, was that intentional or was that just some PA not covering every bit, like, rushing their jobs? Or did they want a little crack? Or did they just think nobody would ever stand on three pillows? Because if he hadn’t stood on those three pillows and been as fast as an NFL running back, falling down the stairs, and still hit the button, I would have got, I think, $195,000 or something. So yes, I think about that every day.
You came so close with that one!
I don’t know what I could have done different. I think I shouldn’t have put myself in jail, but part of me going in the jail was a good distractor because then nobody wanted to hit the button because they didn’t want to go to jail. But I think I just mistimed jail. It should have been timed better, where I went over Rashad and been like, “You want a cookie?” But I don’t think he would have taken his face off the window. He was so locked in.
Susan was a real riot. What did you think of her? And did you have a favorite meal that she made?
Well, I would get in a lot of trouble if I didn’t say her meatballs. So her meatballs! Make sure to shop them on QVC or whatever. What else did she make? I felt like I was just eating energy drinks and espresso shots for every meal. She was so fast also. How fast she could get from the roof down. Yeah, no, I won’t have that much energy when I’m a little older. Not saying she’s old, just a little older. But yeah, it was great. It felt more like I was on the set of a movie than a reality show because everyone was such an over-the-top character. Shane felt like he was straight out of Cobra Kai. It was just everyone. Then you’ve got the other Steve there with his eight pack from Canada, the firefighter with the calendars that he’s on. I’m just like these people are so funny.
There were a couple of showmances sparking this season – and you even played matchmaker in one of them. Do you know if either made it beyond the show? And as someone who met his wife on a reality TV show, what advice do you have for people looking to start a showmance?
Does it show me setting up Lindsey and Shane?
Yes!
These two are gonna get married. They’re, like, still the most serious couple and they text me all the time, like, thanking [me]. Because they would have never, they were both so shy and I guess goofy, I don’t know. But I’m so proud of that because they’re like the best relationship. I think for a year and a half now.
That’s amazing! And it’s all because of you.
That one, I truly, I’ll take 100% credit.
In the end, everyone split about $43,000. How did you feel about that outcome? How did you choose to spend your winnings?
I feel like my winnings went to taxes and agent or manager and a lawyer. So maybe I had lunch at Don Antonio’s. But I was pretty upset. I still am upset. I wanted to at least get $100,000. It felt like a failure, but at least I had fun. It’s good memories. I was not like, “Yay!” Because I was there to win $1 million. So, like, worst case in my brain, once I saw how hard the game was, [I was] like, “OK, I’m going to get at least $100,000 if I split it with two other people.” Because you realize you’re not getting out solo. So then you start just doing the math, like, “OK, I’ll get at least $100,000.” I should have just been like, “You need four people and try to get out at $400,000.” I mean, it’s so much harder than at least the two episodes I watched. It’s harder than that even looks. Like, I know there’s so much going on, but it is so hard.
They made it so hard for you guys to get out – like, almost impossible.
I think it was impossible. That’s right, I’m just very confused how Stein and Cynthia got out. The word is, I think, suspicious.
She gained trust with that button, that’s what it was.
Oh! Because she didn’t hit it because she was there.
Yeah! She didn’t hit it.
OK. I was like, “How did this happen?”
