The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors will consider tougher civil penalties for people participating in and watching illegal street takeovers during a meeting scheduled for Tuesday.
The recommendation submitted by Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell calls for an increase in misdemeanor fines from $500 to $1,000 for those who “organize or knowingly encourage, promote, instigate, assist, facilitate, aid, or abet” illegal takeover events, the agenda for the meeting states.
The proposal would also expand the ordinance beyond public highways to include off-street parking areas and facilitate “removing posts and demonetizing profiles that promote illegal sideshows on major social media platforms.”
The goal of the proposal is to crack down on dangerous events before they start.
In September, three vehicles trying to start a street takeover crashed into a Metro bus in L.A.’s Vermont Vista neighborhood.
The bus was stopped at a red light when the collision occurred. After the crash, all three drivers fled the area.
In July of 2023, a pickup truck drove into a crowd after the driver hit a curb and lost control in the Gramercy Park area of Los Angeles. It was unclear if anyone was injured in the incident.
