EXCLUSIVE: House of the Dragon star Emma D’Arcy has joined Tom Cruise in Oscar-winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s untitled feature movie that’s shooting at Pinewood Studios in the UK.

D’Arcy confirmed the news in a comment they released exclusively to Deadline. “I’m delighted to be working with such extraordinary and exacting artists as Alejandro and Tom,” they told us. “They are the masters of their craft, and witnessing them in combination has been a privilege.”

Back in December, Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment announced that Iñárritu’s film will premiere on October 2, 2026. Per the synopsis, the movie concerns “the most powerful man in the world [who] embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s saviour before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.”

Iñárritu is once again collaborating with his Birdman co-writers Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolas Giacobone, with Sabina Bierman also sharing a screenwriting credit.

Watch on Deadline

Iñárritu won Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture Academy Awards in 2016  for Birdman and was honored with a second Best Director Oscar the following year for The Revenant

Cruise leads a cast that includes Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall, The Zone of Interest), John Goodman (Argo, The Big Lebowski), Jesse Plemons (Kinds of Kindness, The Power of the Dog) Sophie Wilde (Babygirl, Talk to Me), Riz Ahmed (Sound of Metal, Relay) and Michael Stuhlbarg (Dopesick, The Shape of Water). Deadline revealed several casting developments back in August, months after we revealed the project is in the works.

When I spoke to Cruise in February he told me that he was having “the time of my life” working with Iñárritu and “this cast.”

Superstar Cruise will join director Christopher McQuarrie for the world premiere of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning at the Cannes Film Festival where it will be screened Out of Competition on May 14.

The eighth picture in the Mission Impossible franchise will have its stateside theatrical release over the Memorial Day weekend on May 23.

D’Arcy’s last feature appearance was in director Eva Husson’s 2021 movie Mothering Sunday, produced by Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley, opposite Colin Firth, Olivia Colman, Odessa Young, Josh O’Connor, Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù, Patsy Ferran and Glenda Jackson.

MINOR SPOILERS: Of course, D’Arcy’s best known, thus far, for their lead role as Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones prequel adapted from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood novel. In the last episode of Season 2, Rhaenyra was proclaimed the true queen of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm, and was headed for the mother of all bloody battles, for which fans of the HBO drama will have to wait until Season 3 to see.

Martin’s Fire & Blood chronicles the history of House Targaryen and is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

D’Arcy garnered back-to-back Golden Globe Best Performance for a Female Actor nominations for their role in House of the Dragon.

The Talent, a superb short film they produced and starred in, received a British Independent Film Awards nomination for Best British Short in 2023.
