HBO‘s The Last of Us Season 2 is finally here. Tonight, fans of the video game adaptation will be reunited with tenderhearted smuggler Joel (Pedro Pascal) and spunky teen Ellie (Bella Ramsay). Not only that, but because The Last of Us Season 2 is an adaptation of the second game in the Naughty Dog series, The Last of Us II, the HBO hit will introduce a host of compelling new characters to the saga. Sunday nights are once again for gorgeously rendered post-apocalyptic landscapes, chittering zombies covered in fungus, and traumatized characters trying to repress their feelings. The Last of Us is back, baby!
The Last of Us was created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann and follows Joel and Ellie as they navigate monsters and morality in a world wholly transformed by a deadly virus decades earlier. A fungal infection has transformed all who come in contact into mindless, undead parasites. In The Last of Us Season 1, Joel was tasked with shepherding immune fourteen-year-old Ellie from Boston to Salt Lake City. There, doctors allied with the freedom-fighting militia known as Fireflies would create an antidote from Ellie’s DNA.
The Last of Us Season 1 ends with Joel delivering Ellie to the Fireflies only to massacre everyone he finds holding her in the hospital. Why? Because in order to create that antidote, Ellie would have to die. Joel bonded with the girl so much that he now saw himself as her surrogate father. The Last of Us Season 2 will deal with the emotional and strategic fallout of Joel’s decision.
