With the Passover and Easter holidays upon us, it wasn’t much of a surprise that the cold open of last night’s Saturday Night Live—which saw Jon Hamm return as host for the fourth time and “Still Bad” singer Lizzo as musical guest—had a religious angle. It started with Mikey Day as Jesus during the cleansing of the temple, angry at the presence of merchants and money changers corrupting the space. And speaking of corruption: enter Donald “Jesus” Trump (James Austin Johnson), a man who “prays so much, they call me predator.”
Old Don was popping in to chat about those harsh tariffs and the plummeting stock market: “I also got rid of money last week but instead of one temple, I did a whole country. Maybe even the globe,” he quipped. After claiming that the stock market “did a Jesus” after his back-and-forth financial policies (“It died, then on the third day, it was risen. And then on the fourth day, it died again. Possibly, never to return, just like Jesus”), POTUS segued to the upcoming Easter festivities, a.k.a. “the day where the most homophobic people try to dress as gay as possible.”
Throughout all of this, Day’s Jesus and the rest of the actors—everyone donning biblical garb—were paused in place behind Johnson’s Trump, who hilariously took the opportunity to break the fourth wall and poke fun at fellow cast members including Mikey “Great Clips” Day, Ego Nwodim and Sarah Sherman while each struggled not to buckle in the face of his taunts. (“Look at Sarah Sherman, stuck with her mouth open back there—bad choice!”) After his own call-out, Kenan Thompsonyet again trolled Morgan Wallen with his own abrupt walk-off.
