Xoloitzcuintli are such gorgeous dogs, and they are one of the oldest dog breeds in America.
Rover explains, “Archaeologists have discovered clay and ceramic statues of dogs nearly identical to the current-day Xolo in tombs of the Mayan, Colima and Aztec Indians. These ancient tribes revered the dogs for their supposed healing qualities, and snuggled up with them at night for warmth.”
One of the most important things you can teach your dog is the command for wait.
PetHelpful explains the first step in teaching this command is teaching your dog to stay, “When you want your puppy to “wait” show him the palm of your right hand. Say “wait.” At this point, you may find he automatically sits down. If he does, great. If he doesn’t, that’s fine too. What does matter is he recognizes the palm of your hand as a command to stop doing what he is doing. When he stops, give him a few seconds and then call him to you and praise him. Do not go to him as with the “stay.” He will soon recognize the difference and see “wait” as a slight pause before the fun can continue.”
Of course, as with any type of training for cats or dogs, lots of affection, treats and positive reenforcement helps!
If this beautiful and rare dog sounds like a good fit for you, you can learn more about the breed and find reputable breeders from the Xoloitzcuintli Club of America.
