One thing about older generations is that they will ALWAYS have something to say about young people.
A while back, Reddit user u/IslamicAnime asked, “Older women of Reddit, what is something young women are doing that puzzles you?” And the responses range from majorly petty to SOoOOooOo valid. Here are the best ones:
.“Crying on the internet. I’m talking full-on snot-bubble crying. Maybe it’s my childhood trauma talking, but I can’t fathom having an awful thing happen to me and then taking out my phone to tell my ‘followers’ about it. I just bury it deep and slap on a smile like my mom taught me to do.”
.“Getting Botox in their early 20s. There’s nothing there. What wrinkles are you trying to fix?!”
.“They are SO good at makeup. I don’t know if it’s because they have better products, the availability of tutorial videos, or both, but they all look amazing. Meanwhile, women of my generation were walking around with orange faces and smudged eyeliner. I’m a little jealous!”
.“Wearing comfy shoes like sneakers to the club instead of heels. I’m certainly not mad at it. I’m just mad I never did that!”
.“Buccal fat removal. It’s gotten popular, but it’s permanent, which means your body will never make more of it. Buccal fat removal ages the face immediately, which isn’t a problem for most women in their 20s, but as they actually do age, there is a high likelihood that they will need to constantly get fillers for the rest of their lives to combat the side effects of significant premature aging.”
.“I’m constantly amazed at how open young people are to LGBTQ+ people. Thirty years ago, in even purple cities, there was so much hatred. I really admire young people’s openness and even resent I wasn’t born into their generation.”
.“I cringe when I hear young women say they don’t want to go to college or work. Their entire life plan is to marry rich and live off a man. Every woman should make sure she completes college, has a career, and makes a life for yourself. Always be able to support yourself and not be trapped.”
.“Tracking one another’s locations. I teach high school math, and my students have tracking apps so they can see exactly where their friends are at all times. I think it’s weird as hell. Someone was absent, and when I asked, ‘Where is Martha?’ to nobody in particular, her friend in class pulled out her phone and replied, ‘Oh, she should be here soon. She’s in the bathroom.’ I find it incredibly creepy, but they have no issue with it.”
.“Having children with men who are basically children themselves. If you’re living with a guy and he doesn’t do a genuine 50% of the housework, it will be exponentially worse when you have a baby.”
.“My gripes are what they don’t do. Tweezing brows and shaving pits and legs. Also, wear a bra in public no matter what!!”
.“I’m in my 40s and work with a group of women in their 20s. The one thing I find interesting is how they flaunt their mental diagnosis as a way to get away with inappropriate behavior at work. They have ‘meltdowns’ and then come back and say, ‘It’s not my fault. I have borderline personality disorder.’ I’m all for discussing mental health and not stigmatizing it, but it’s like they use it as an excuse for getting away with sh*t.”
.“I am bewildered by women who do not prioritize the ability to support themselves.”
.“Van life and the whole ‘glamour’ around it. That whole Look at me sipping my coffee sitting in the back of my van in front of the sunrise act is way overrated and very, very fake. Van life or camper life can be fun and a great adventure at times, but it comes with a lot of work, expense, and risk that young people these days leave out of the narrative.”
.“I am actually amazed by young women’s self-confidence these days. So many of the amazing young adults I meet through my kids just scream confidence. I still feel insecure at 50. Maybe it’s because they’ve always been online listening to everyone’s opinions and they had to learn just not to care. They are straight-up fierce.”
.“Sending NUDES with their FACE in them!!! This makes no sense to me and is an invitation to unscrupulous dudes to hurt you. Please notice how few GUYS include their faces in nudes. Please, please stop doing this to yourselves. If they ask, simply say ‘F*CK NO!’ Or better yet, ‘YOU first!’ This is the thing that young women do that I will never, ever understand. Even purportedly ‘nice’ guys have the potential to weaponize your nudes if you give them the tools to do so.”
.“I’m only in my early 40s, but I find it weird that people think they’re doing something really poppin’ when they take selfies where the cellphone blocks part of their face or the entire face. I find that so stupid. It’s the same with car selfies. I will NEVER, EVER take a car selfie for as long as I live. Oh, and don’t get me started on selfies taken with an iPad…”
.“The overdone lip filler injections. I can’t wait for this trend to die.”
.“I will never understand the ‘do it for the ‘gram’ mentality. My boyfriend and I recently attended a touristy attraction on a weekend away. It was one of those linear deals where you progress through and can’t really pass other people easily. The three young women in front of us were repeatedly holding everyone up so they could take video of each other…walking. Literally just multiple videos of them walking away. Boyfriend finally asked if we could pass them because ‘we’re just walking and looking at things and not filming each other.'”
.“The bum-lifting leggings with the bit that splits the cheeks I see so much of at the gym. Absolutely not body-shaming and I admire their confidence, but we spent the ’90s asking, ‘Does my bum look big in this?’ I like a bit of coverage with my gym wear, too, and I’d feel very self-conscious in a lot of today’s gym wear.”
.“Since when did eyebrows become so important?! All of a sudden, it was all about the eyebrows and making them look absolutely perfect. To me, it is so silly and ridiculous. It’s literally two small lines of hair on your face! Most of the time, I don’t even notice eyebrows unless they are super wonky.”
.“I think all of the younger generation (dudes, too) need to ‘go touch grass’ and get off their phones and read a f*cking book once in a while (or more often even).”
.And lastly, “Headphones are not accessories!!! This is my biggest beef with Gen Z. Fully wearing a pair of AirPods with no sound coming through them and considering it some kind of fashion statement? It’s dumb, and my old ass will happily die on this hill.”
