Former LSU wide receiver Kyren Lacy has died at the age of 24.

What is his cause of death? How did Lacy die? Although the official cause of death for Lacy has not been given by authorities, local news outlets are reporting his cause of death via sources.

A source told WAFB-TV that Lacy’s death is “a suspected suicide.” That station, which is based in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, also confirmed Lacy’s death through his family, according to an article written by its sports director Jacques Doucet.

WBRZ-TV reported that suicide was his cause of death. That station is also located in Baton Rouge. “WBRZ Investigative Unit sources said the cause of death was suicide,” the television station wrote.

The New York Post also reported that Lacy’s cause of death was “suicide,” citing multiple reports. Fans expressed grief over Lacy’s death. “These kids gotta understand one mistake doesn’t define who they are. Kyren Lacy had so much life ahead of him I really hate to hear that,” wrote one fan on X.

Lacy’s lawyer slammed the NFL, investigation, and media in a statement to WAFB made after his death.

“Kyren Lacy situation is peak sadness. Wow,” another fan wrote.

Lacy died as challenges mounted for him stemming from a fatal crash that came as he was being considered as a draft prospect.

According to WAFB-TV, Lacy’s death came the day before a grand jury “was set to start hearing evidence” on accusations “related to a deadly hit-and-run crash in Lafourche Parish.”

ESPN confirmed Lacy’s death with an LSU official on April 13, 2025.

According to ESPN, he was accused of negligent homicide and “causing a crash that killed a 78-year-old man on Dec. 17 and then fleeing the scene without rendering aid or calling authorities.”

On Jan. 12, Lacy was jailed and released on bail, ESPN reported. He had declared for the NFL draft just two days after the crash, according to ESPN.

Lacy’s death was also confirmed by his family to Doucet, who wrote on X, “I have confirmed with a family member that former @LSUfootball wide receiver Kyren Lacy has passed away in Houston. @WAFB.”

The circumstances of Lacy’s death were not otherwise released, such as where he was found. Tributes immediately flowed on Instagram for Lacy. The New York Times reported that he died in Houston, Texas, which Doucet also confirmed.

According to The Times, after the crash, Lacy “was not invited to the NFL Scouting Combine.”

Before the crash, Lacy’s career looked very promising.

He “played three seasons at LSU,” The Times reported, noting that he “led the Tigers with nine touchdown catches last season. He had 866 yards on 58 receptions in 12 games.”

There are resources immediately available online and by phone for people with mental health struggles.
