Eyebrows were raised when scandalous exes and former “Smash” co-stars Debra Messing and Will Chase seemed to avoid each other at the opening night of the Broadway musical based on the hit TV show.
A source pointedly noted that Messing and Chase — who were married to other people when they met on set in 2011 — posed with other former cast members on the red carpet, but were not photographed together.
They weren’t spotted interacting throughout the evening, either, says a spy.
But an insider insists that the missed connection happened only because they arrived at different times, and that it was not intentional. “No one knew when anyone was arriving,” says a source.
And according to another source, the former flames did manage to catch up later over text.
“When she got home, Debra got a text from Will and they had a chat about the evening,” says a source, who tells us Messing did not even know he was there.
The former couple — who dated for two and a half years — caused quite a media uproar when they began dating.
Messing announced on Dec. 20 2011 that she and her husband of 10 years, TV producer Daniel Zelman, had split earlier that year.
Shortly after the announcement, she was spotted with Chase, who played her ex-boyfriend on the show.
Chase had recently split with his wife, actress Stephanie Gibson.
Messing and Chase dated until 2014.
“Debra Messing and Will Chase have ended their two and a half year relationship, but remain close friends,” a rep said at the time.
Chase then moved on with singer Ingrid Michaelson. They are still together.
In 2021, Messing wrote a heartfelt tribute to Lori Davis, Chases’ ex wife, when she passed away.
Other guests at the new musical, about the making of a Marilyn Monroe bio-musical called “Bombshell,” included Sarah Jessica Parker and Mathew Broderick, Kristin Chenoweth, Billy Crystal, Nathan Lane and Julianna Margulies.
Original “Smash” stars Christian Borle, Andy Mientus, Anna Harada, Wesley Taylor and Krysta Rodriguez were also there.
The show was canceled after two seasons.
