The White Lotus star Aimee Lou Wood doesn’t regret calling out Saturday Night Live over a “mean and unfunny” sketch poking fun at her appearance.
On April 12, the season three breakout star called out the comedy show for taking “cheap” shots at her looks and accent in a sketch called “The White Potus,” which reimagined the series with members of the Trump family and other prominent political figures.
Though SNL tapped recurring White Lotus actor Jon Gries to appear in the sketch, Wood’s character Chelsea was satirized by comedian Sarah Sherman, who wore a set of large fake teeth and asked Jon Hamm’s Robert F. Kennedy Jr. about fluoride, a chemical found in oral care products.
Needless to say, Aimee Lou Wood was not a fan of the sketch, calling it “mean and unfunny” in an Instagram story, adding, “Felt righteous might delete later.”
In another slide, she added, “Such a shame cuz I had such a great time watching it a couple weeks ago. Yes, take the piss for sure—that’s what the show is about—but there must be a cleverer, more nuanced, less cheap way?”
Wood did not end up deleting the post after receiving “thousands” of encouraging messages from her followers. “I’m glad I said something instead of going in on myself,” she said in another post before sharing responses from fans.
Wood seemed to agree with a fan who noted her character was the only non-political figure being mocked in the sketch, as well as a fan who called out Sherman’s “terrible” attempt at Wood’s Manchester accent.
“At least get the accent right seriously,” Wood added with a laughing emoji. “I respect accuracy even if it’s mean.”
A couple hours after sharing fan responses, Wood posted an update, saying she’s “had apologies from SNL,” though she didn’t specify who reached out.
Though Wood has received a lot of praise for her natural, veneer-free smile over the past few weeks, the 31-year-old actor wishes there was less discourse about her appearance. “It’s really weird because…it was the thing that I was bullied for,” she recently told Glamour. “So there’s a full-circle thing about the thing that you’re bullied for is now the thing that everyone’s being like, ‘I love your teeth!’ But then it does get to the point where you’re like, ‘Can we stop fucking talking about it?’…Because then it actually ends up feeling a bit similar.”
She continues, “When it becomes the only thing that’s spoken about, I’m like, ‘I did a load of work. I did seven months of really hard work.’”
