EXCLUSIVE: Propagate, the indie studio founded by Ben Silverman and Howard T. Owens, has wrapped production on Boy George & Culture Club, a documentary on the iconic New Wave band of the same name and its frontman, from director Alison Ellwood (Laurel Canyon).
The doc is said to offer a provocative, chaotic, and impossibly fun look at one of music’s most groundbreaking bands, charting their meteoric rise to fame, dramatic split, and remarkable reunion. For the first time, band members Boy George, Roy Hay, Mikey Craig, and Jon Moss come together to share their complete story, offering candid insights into their creative process, personal relationships, and the cultural impact that defined a generation. Set against the backdrop of 1980s Britain, the doc explores how four young men formed a multi-racial, ethnically diverse, and sexually liberated band with a style and sound that challenged the status quo during the era of New Romantics and Margaret Thatcher’s Britain.
As Silverman explains, “Culture Club didn’t just create music – they created a cultural movement that transformed how the world viewed identity, fashion, and artistic expression. This film celebrates their revolutionary impact while honestly confronting the complex interpersonal dynamics that both fueled their creativity and ultimately led to their dissolution.”

At the heart of the documentary is the previously unexplored love story between George and Moss — a relationship that inspired some of the band’s biggest hits but also contributed to their eventual breakup.
“I was thrilled to once again collaborate with the producing team at Fine Point Films to direct a music documentary about such a seminal 80’s band, Culture Club,” Ellwood told us. “This unique story is perhaps more culturally relevant today than it was when the band first formed. Told from an inside perspective, George, Jon, Mikey and Roy share an honest, and at times heart wrenching account of their rocket to fame – always with a joyful twinge of humour.”
The film is produced by Propagate in association with Fine Point Films, Primary Wave Music, and Polygram Entertainment. Executive producers include Silverman, Owens, James Packer, Drew Buckley, Isabel San Vargas, Andrew D Corkin, and Eimhear O’Neill. Producers are Natalia Nastaskin, Lawrence Mestel, David Blackman, Trevor Birney, and Andrew Tully.
Founded in 2015, Propagate’s successes include the Food Network’s Chopped franchise, as well as numerous lauded documentaries and docuseries, including Untold, In Her Hands, and Anna Nicole Smith for Netflix, the Emmy-nominated Hillary for Hulu, and LFG for Max. Set to premiere its Owen Wilson golf comedy Stick on Apple TV+ on June 4, the studio’s upcoming slate also includes the animated Lulu Is a Rhinoceros for Apple, as well as Nanette Burstein’s documentary on disgraced crypto entrepreneur Sam Bankman-Fried.
