‘The Phone Rang Out of Nowhere… It Was Heartbreakingly Sweet’

Angelica Huston revealed to People magazine that her ex Jack Nicholson called her out of the blue amid the L.A. wildfires earlier this year to offer his house for her to stay at. Huston was forced to evacuate her ranch in the Sierra Nevada mountain range during the event. Huston and Nicholson famously dated on and off from 1973 to 1990.

“The phone just rang out of nowhere, and it was him,” Huston said about Nicholson’s call during the wildfires. “It’s always a comfort when he calls… It was heartbreakingly sweet. I’ve gone back over it several times in my head, and I think next time I’d accept the invitation.”

Nicholson and Huston’s relationship came to definitive end in 1990 after he after he fathered a child outside of their relationship. She went on to marry the sculptor Robert Graham two years later. But she remained friendly with Nicholson and told People that their lasting relationship is “important.” Unfortunately, the two rarely see each other much these days.

“Life gets in the way,” Huston told People. “Also, for some reason, they’ve been doing endless rerouting and road work near his house, so it takes hours to get to him, and that’s always irritating. I always managed to be late going to see him, which is very irritating for him.”

Huston’s father, the legendary film director John Huston, cast her opposite Nicholson in 1985’s “Prizzi’s Honor,” which won Angelica the Oscar for supporting actress. She remembered: “The combination of [Jack] and my father made it really significant and important. They managed to circumvent all the difficulties, and we triumphed in the end.”

While Huston continues to act (she’ll next be seen in BritBox’ murder mystery “Agatha Christie’s Towards Zero,” premiering April 16), Nicholson is mostly retired and hasn’t appeared in a movie since 2010’s “How Do You Know.” He surprised fans in February by popping up in a rare live television appearance at “SNL50,” where he introduced a musical performance from his “Anger Management” co-star Jack Nicholson.
