Lizzo loves her new figure, but she doesn’t like to use the term “weight loss” about her body transformation. The singer said she prefers saying she had a “weight release” as it provides a more positive connotation.

“The weight that is no longer on me is not just fat or physical,” the “Juice” singer, 36, explained during an appearance on Jay Shetty’s “On Purpose” podcast on Monday, April 7. “I released so much to get to this point, and I think people can see that and I don’t want to describe anything as loss.”

“I’m not experiencing any loss. I’ve actually gained so much,” Lizzo – real name Melissa Jefferson –confessed. “I’ve gained a sense of self. I’ve gained a lifestyle that I actually really love and I’m like, ‘I can maintain this.’ I’ve gained new perspective on nutrition and the science behind cardio and weight lifting.”

“People aren’t going to understand this right now, but it’s the most body-positive way to experience what I’m going through. I don’t want to use any negative terms,” she added.

Lizzo credited boyfriend Myke Wright with helping her find the new way to describe the changes to her body.

“My man, he’s so funny. He was the one who kind of like brought it to my attention at first because at first, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I lost five pounds.’ He was like, ‘Where did it go?,’” the “Truth Hurts” singer said with a laugh.

It caused her to find an “interesting” way to describe her ongoing health and fitness journey.

“It was like, ‘I don’t think I want to lose anything. I think I want to win. I think I want to gain,'” Lizzo explained.

The Grammy winner hoped that her choosing to call what she underwent as a “release” inspires her fans in a positive way with their own body goals.

“I want to be very intentional with the words that come out of my mouth,” she said. “There’s young people who are watching me and they’re experiencing what I’m putting into the world and they’re applying it to their own experience and their own life just like I did when I was a kid.”

Lizzo continued, “I saw how the media treated people who gained and lost weight and how that affected my brain chemistry.”

The “About Damn Time” singer shared the clip from Jay’s podcast to her Instagram, writing in the caption, “This is your body. You only get one of these. Enjoy it and let it enjoy you.”

Fans applauded Lizzo’s message. One person commented, “‘Weight release journey’ is GOLD! Such a neutral way to explain it,” while a second user added, “Really appreciate your words and wisdom here and the way you navigated this conversation.”

Life & Style exclusively reported in September 2024 that the Detroit, Michigan, native shed more than 60 pounds from her 5-foot-10 frame. As Lizzo underwent her weight loss through a combination of diet and exercise, she began using the term “body neutrality” instead of “body positivity.”

“I’m taking some time every day to put love into my body,” Lizzo told The New York Times in March 2024. “There’s never a day when I regret taking a walk or doing some Pilates.”
