Jimmy Kimmel may have just revealed President Trump’s reasoning behind launching the tariffs.
“The question of why is he doing this has been asked a lot of times over the past week,” Kimmel said on Live Wednesday (April 9). “I think he may have given us the answer last night.”
The late night host continued, “He’s doing it because he likes it when other countries bend the knee.”
Kimmel then aired a clip of President Trump’s speech at the National Republican Committee Dinner, made before he announced the tariffs would be delayed another 90 days.
In the clip, Trump claimed leaders from other countries were begging for trade deals and promising they would “do anything” to land one.
“I’m telling you, other countries are calling us up, kissing my ass, they are dying to make a deal,” Trump says in the video. He then did an impersonation of other world leaders begging, “Please, please, I’ll make a deal. I’ll do anything, I’ll do anything, sir!”
Kimmel joked that Trump’s impersonation sounded a bit like something else he might enjoy more than tariff negotiations.
“That sounds less to me like a phone call from a fellow world leader and more like the genre of porno he likes to watch,” he quipped.
The Live host then called Trump out for not giving China a break from the tariffs despite the delay, considering many things sold in America are manufactured in China.
“One country that is not getting a reprieve from tariffs is China and that’s the big one,” Kimmel began. “Everything is made in China, you know those stickers that say ‘Made in the USA?’ Those are made in china.”
He continued, “and when you think about all of the stuff we buy in china it’s significant.” He then began pulling several pieces of Trump merchandise out of a bag – including a shot glass, a hat, a windbreaker, and more – all of which were reportedly made in China, according to Kimmel.
Jimmy Kimmel Live airs weeknights at 11:35/10:35c on ABC.
