REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. (WHNT) — Alabama Congressman Mike Rogers said the announcement of the relocation of U.S. Space Command is expected to come soon.
Rogers said in an Auburn University’s Cyber Focus podcast interview Tuesday that he expects Space Command’s relocation announcement to come this month.
“I expect sometime during the month of April, Space Command will be officially assigned to build its headquarters in Huntsville,” Rogers said.
Senator Tommy Tuberville said everything is ready for Space Command in Huntsville.
“Everything’s ready,” Tuberville said. “We’ve got the land, we’ve got the process and we’ve got organization of what we’re going to do and how we’re going to do it.”
He said he believes the president’s appointee for Secretary of the Air Force will be confirmed in the next few weeks, and he will be in charge of the decision. Tuberville said Dr. Troy Meink can move the Space Command headquarters if he’s confirmed.
“Rest assured that I will be reminding him of the multiple studies confirming that Huntsville is the best place for SPACECOMM,” said Tuberville.
Alabama Representative Shomari Figures said SPACECOMM will add to Huntsville’s reputation in space.
“Multiple independent reviews have shown that Alabama is the best home for the Space Force,” he said. “And it’s time to get this behind us, get this chapter behind us and get some shovels in the ground; get some workers here and get going in defending the country.”
Huntsville was named a finalist in early 2021 for the new headquarters. Then, in 2022, the Department of Defense named the city as the “preferred permanent location for U.S. Space Command headquarters.”
The Rocket City finished first in both the Air Force’s evaluation phase and the selection phase, while Colorado Springs finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
In June 2023, a U.S. Space Command General reportedly confirmed to Alabama politicians in D.C. and the Alabama Delegation that the state is still ‘the preferred location for SPACECOM headquarters.’
In September 2023, the House Armed Services Committee held a hearing on the decision by Space Command about the decision to select Colorado Springs over Huntsville for the command headquarters.
In a radio interview in Nov. 2024, Rogers claimed former President Joe Biden kept it in Colorado for ‘political reasons.’
“But I knew he would because if you remember, not only did Alabama win two nationwide competitions, but President Trump’s secretary of the Air Force recommended Huntsville, President Biden’s secretary of the Air Force recommended Huntsville, and then Biden took it away for political reasons,” Rogers said.
After President Donald Trump was re-elected in 2024, state lawmakers expressed their hope that he would move the headquarters to Huntsville.
