How to choose a designer bag
AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron
Designer bags are often—shocker—quite expensive, so it’s a good idea to start by outlining a budget when you’re starting your collection.
“For me, a useful metric is cost per wear. Is this a bag you’ll use daily? Weekly?” says Amy Odell, founder of the fashion newsletter Back Row. “If I have the money saved and I can afford to get something at a luxury price point, I feel more comfortable doing so knowing that, say, it will last me 10 years and be an incredibly functional piece that will also make me feel happy when I’m carrying it.”
High-end pricing often unlocks better, more durable details like distinct, functional designs and smooth, buttery leather. But after a certain point, higher price tags might denote a brand’s exclusivity rather than a handbag’s quality. So, which luxury bag is worth buying? “While a lot of bags that are $10,000 and up get the bulk of media attention, a brand like Loewe makes beautiful large bags for around $3,000; Saint Laurent makes a highly functional black tote for even less,” Odell says.
Designer bags aren’t immune to trends, and the experts we interviewed say it’s best to err on the side of timelessness to maximize your wear. Classic shapes like totes, buckets, crescents, and satchels will never go out of style; they’re also the best investments if you want your bag to appreciate over time. Leather and canvas in neutral colors are your best bet. Trends get involved when bags shrink to unrealistic sizes, contort into highly specific shapes, and come in more in-your-face colors and materials (hello, raffia). There’s nothing wrong with trends, but consider how well a piece will fit into your wardrobe before dropping thousands of dollars on it. (You might even want to wait a season or two to see if you’re still thinking about the bag once it’s out of the spotlight; they might depreciate.) These can also be good investments; the Loewe Puzzle Fold Tote and the Acne Studios Multipocket Bag are popular right now, but don’t look instantly dated.
“You also have to think carefully about what you’re going to carry in your bag,” Odell says. Work bags, for example, should fit a laptop and be structured enough to handle heavy loads. “Think about where you’re going to be putting your bag down. Will you be putting it on the floor often? A locker that may or may not be pristine? Then maybe you want something dark with feet.” One more thing: Check if the hardware matches the tones of jewelry you most often wear, especially if it’s a standout detail on the bag.
Where to buy a designer bag
AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron
With purchases this big, make sure you’re doing your due diligence before clicking “buy.” You’re safe ordering from trusted luxury retailers like Nordstrom, Net-a-Porter, Bergdorf Goodman, or Ssense; you can also order directly from many brands to ensure you’re getting the real thing. Designer bags frequently go on sale, but if the price is too good to be true or you’re not quite sure about the site you’re using, it might be best to hold off.
Some brands (like Chanel) and models (like the Hermès Birkin) aren’t sold new online; to get them outside of a boutique, you’ll have to buy them secondhand on the resale market. There are plenty of reputable sources for handbags with a second lease on life: Amazon partnered with What Goes Around Comes Around for its secondhand bag marketplace, and sites like The RealReal, Fashionphile, and Rebag offer authenticated pieces from brands like Dior, Louis Vuitton, Celine, Chloé, and Fendi.
Oh, and one more thing: “Read the care instructions when you get your bag!” Odell says. “Take care of it so it lasts longer. Don’t set it on a radiator or put it away without a dust bag or stuffing. It’s heartbreaking to invest in a new piece you love and then mistakenly harm it.”
Best Investment: Gucci Horsebit 1955 Shoulder Bag
Gucci Horsebit 1955 Shoulder Bag
Gucci
Behind the brand: The Italian luxury fashion house has been making luxury leather goods since 1913.
Known for: The gold horse-bit hardware and iconic red and green stripes, with many timeless handbag styles to choose from.
This Gucci everyday bag was introduced in 2020, but it’s based on an archival design from 1955. (Good taste is timeless.) “I’ve owned this bag for four years now, and it’s still in great condition,” says Samantha Barry, Glamour’s editor-in-chief. “I love the classic, retro vibe it has and the fact that it’s a versatile spring-to-summer bag.” If you’d prefer an option without the house’s iconic monogram canvas, it’s also available entirely in leather.
Best for Work: Saint Laurent Shopping Bag
Saint Laurent Shopping Bag
Net-A-Porter
Saks Fifth Avenue
Bloomingdale’s
Behind the brand: Yves Saint Laurent originally founded his brand as an haute couture house. Anthony Vaccarello is the current creative director of the French maison, which is now known as Saint Laurent. (The brand’s perfume is still under the YSL name.)
Known for: Accessories that embody a Parisian cool factor with popular bag styles including Le 5 à 7 hobos and quilted Lou cross-body styles, both embellished with the elegant logo.
There are many high-end tote bags in this world, but few balance brand value and price per wear as expertly as this one. “The Saint Laurent Shopping Bag is, for a luxury item, a good buy at $1,500,” says Amy Odell, founder of the fashion newsletter Back Row. “I like how structured and durable it is.” You could use it for shopping, as the name implies, but it’s especially great for work: There’s enough room (and structure) in the main compartment for a laptop, a change of shoes, a wallet, a book, and anything else you might need in a day.
Best Shoulder Bag: Jacquemus Le Bisou Perle Bag
Jacquemus Le Bisou Perle Bag
Net-a-Porter
Jacquemus
Behind the brand: Simon Porte Jacquemus founded Jacquemus in 2009 after moving from the South of France to Paris.
Known for: Its tiny colorful bags, like Le Bisou, Mini Chiquito, and Bambino.
“Some Jacquemus bags are a bit too trendy for me, but I love the giant bead on the Le Bisou bag so much that I’m ready to add it to my collection,” says Vogue senior commerce editor Talia Abbas. This staple, shoulder bag can be used for everyday wear and seamlessly transitions from day-to-night, depending on your mood; pair with a crisp button down and trousers for the office or a little black dress for an evening out.
Best Crossbody: DeMellier Vancouver Bag
DeMellier Vancouver Bag
Neiman Marcus
Saks Fifth Avenue
Behind the brand: Mireia Llusia-Lindh founded DeMellier to offer ethically crafted and responsibly sourced handbags at attainable price points. The collection is designed in London and made in family-owned factories in Spain.
Known for: Modern, sleek styles that can take you from work to weekend.
A favorite of royals like Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle, DeMellier is an under-the-radar brand that provides a nice counterbalance to houses with more exposure. “The designs always make me feel a little more polished and pulled together, even if I’m just in straight leg jeans,” says Paula Lee, a Glamour fashion contributor and brand consultant. “Currently, I’m hoping for its signature Vancouver style in a light neutral color as we head into the warmer months. More often than not, I use a cross-body, and I’m really into the structured shape, smooth leather, and minimal gold hardware of this one.”
Best Tote: Mansur Gavriel Small Zip Tote
Mansur Gavriel Small Zip Tote
Nordstrom
Farfetch
Behind the brand: Rachel Mansur and Floriana Gavriel founded their eponymous label in 2013 to almost instant success; Katie Holmes, Taylor Swift, and Naomi Watts, among many other A-listers, have been spotted in the brand.
Known for: The brand’s hero styles—and its two first products—are its tote bag and its bucket bag, two handbag collection staples. Don’t miss the brand’s stellar wallets and ballet flats, though.
“As a freelance writer, I can (and do) work from everywhere—home, coffee shops, libraries, you name it. So nothing sells me like a bag that can fit both my laptop and Kindle,” says Deanna Pai, a Glamour contributor. “I love this classic tote from Mansur Gavriel, which is spacious enough for everything I need while still being structured enough to take to meetings and appointments. Plus, the color is beautiful and it fits into the Citi Bike baskets, so I can secure when I’m riding around town.”
Best Clutch: Loewe Medium Flamenco Clutch
Loewe Medium Flamenco Clutch
Saks Fifth Avenue
Loewe
Behind the brand: This luxury Spanish brand is the eldest in the LVMH portfolio (it was founded in the 19th century), with JW Anderson as the current creative director.
Known for: Its wicker totes and Puzzle bags are bestsellers, though editors and celebs love its Squeeze Tote just as much.
Loewe is the opposite of a newcomer, but there’s been an intense renewed interest in the brand thanks to a plethora of buzzy new bags—chief among them the Flamenco. “I personally love my Loewe Flamenco. I hemmed and hawed over which bag to buy for many years and am very happy with my purchase,” Odell says. “I have traveled with it and I bring it around New York City often, and it’s been great. I love the smaller size, which comes with a chain you can tuck away, as well (though I haven’t purchased one).” This one, meanwhile, converts to a shoulder bag with a leather strap.
Best for Travel: Métier Incognito Large Cabas Tote
Métier Incognito Large Cabas Tote
Net-a-Porter
Behind the brand: London-based label Métier was launched in 2017 and offers artisanal handcrafted in Italy leather accessories for the modern traveler.
Known for: Its quiet luxury aesthetic that puts premium leather and craftsmanship at the forefront. Fans include Kate Middleton, Kate Moss, and Nicole Kidman.
Crafted from supple suede panels with just a hint of slouch, this zip-top tote from the relatively new brand Métier is the epitome of quiet luxury. “I decided to leave the canvas tote behind and carry all my essentials in style,” says stylist Casey Trudeau. “Initially, I purchased this Métier suede tote with the intention of using it for big meetings, but it has become my go-to carryall for everyday use.” Plus, it’s big enough to function as a chic carry-on, with enough room for tech, a change of clothes, shoes, and a water bottle.
Best Small Bag: Hereu Small Bombon Bag
Hereu Small Bombon Bag
Ssense
Farfetch
Behind the brand: Named for the Catalan word for “heir,” Hereu was founded in 2014 and has earned a cult following for its leather shoes and bags.
Known for: Its high-quality, sustainably produced shoes—although its bags (clearly) are just as worth the investment.
“This bag from Spanish brand Hereu is called the Bombon, which as an American makes me think of a cute little cake, but I have since learned is a slang term for ‘sexy lady’ or ‘bombshell’ in Spanish,” says Stephanie McNeal, a senior editor at Glamour. “I feel like the combination of the two really speaks to this bag’s essence. She’s adorable, but also sleek and ready for a night out. It’s roomy enough to be carried for a day outing, but also does double duty as a clutch, and can be worn with her thin, adjustable shoulder strap or daintily grasped by her braided handles. A true day-to-night icon.”
Best for Commuting: Loewe Puzzle Fold Tote
Loewe Puzzle Fold Tote
Neiman Marcus
Saks Fifth Avenue
Loewe
Behind the brand: This luxury Spanish brand is the eldest in the LVMH portfolio (it was founded in the 19th century). Jonathan Anderson revived the house as the creative director for eleven years, but in March 2025, the brand announced that Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez from Proenza Schouler will be taking the reins.
Known for: Its wicker totes and Puzzle bags are bestsellers, though editors and celebs love its Squeeze Tote just as much.Best Slouchy: Toteme T-Lock Leather Clutch
Shopper totes are great for schlepping, whether you’re off to work or running errands. Loewe’s sculptural Puzzle Fold tote is the chicest means to that end. “It’s gorgeous and just the right size for a commuting bag—it fits a laptop and your basic essentials without feeling cramped,” says Rachel Fletcher, commerce director at Architectural Digest. “I will say it’s pretty delicate considering the price tag, and blemishes show pretty easily on the leather because it isn’t pebbled or grainy—after putting it in my bike basket once, it got a bit scratched up. But I’m also not someone who is accustomed to carrying a designer bag, so take that with a grain of salt.”
Toteme T-Lock Leather Clutch
Nordstrom
Net-a-Porter
Neiman Marcus
Behind the brand: Influencer-turned-designer Elin Kling cofounded the Stockholm-based label in 2014 with her husband.
Known for: Its minimalist Scandinavian design aesthetic that is designed to transcend seasonal trends. Handbags were launched in 2022 and got the fashion crowd quickly on board.
Toteme can do no wrong in my book. I splurge on its year-round wardrobe staples like the anorak jacket and perfectly cut tanks,” Lee says. “I don’t own a classic, goes-with-everything handbag in black or tan, and I keep returning to the smooth leather T-Lock Shoulder Bag. It’s perfectly balanced in two ways: spacious enough for daily use without being too overwhelmingly large, and structured but with a tiny bit of slouch that makes it less proper. Plus, it comes with the all-important detachable shoulder strap!”
Best Handbag: Gucci Diana Small Tote Bag
Gucci Diana Small Tote Bag
Gucci
“Princess Diana is my eternal style icon, so how could I not purchase one of her most favorite handbags?” says Glamour senior beauty editor Ariana Yaptangco. “The style was so beloved by the former Princess of Wales that Gucci decided to name it after her when they reimagined the design in 2021, almost 30 years after the original was spotted on her arm. The style is timeless and versatile, characteristics that must be credited to Princess Diana, who schlepped it to the gym and elegantly toted it at formal events all the same.”
Best Pre-Owned: Chanel Quilted Lambskin Snap Full Flap Mini
Chanel Quilted Lambskin Snap Full Flap Mini
Amazon
Behind the brand: Gabrielle Chanel, better known as Coco, opened the first Chanel boutique in 1910 as a millinery; in 1915, the house expanded into haute couture; perfume launched in 1921. Since then, the house has been helmed by iconic designers like Karl Lagerfeld and Virginie Viard.
Known for: Tweed, quilted leather, and very nice perfume. You already know the brand’s iconic monogram, which adorns all of its coveted bags.
Again, you can only buy Chanel on the resale market if you’re shopping online. (By default, that makes Chanel the best handbag to buy when you’re in Paris or at any of its other retail locations.) This authenticated pick has all of the house’s touchstones: quilted leather, a woven strap, and a gleaming gold monogram. In other words, it’s the exact right piece to launch your budding Chanel collection.
Best Backpack: Prada Re-Nylon Medium Backpack
Prada Re-Nylon Medium Backpack
Prada
Saks Fifth Avenue
Behind the brand: The legacy Italian brand has been around since 1913, and Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons are Prada’s current creative directors.
Known for: The brand has revived a handful of aughts-era bags in its Re-Edition collection in recent years—and made them more sustainable—all of which are cool-girl staples.
“I lived through the original Prada nylon mania of the late ’90s and early 2000s, but there was no way my parents were ever spending that amount of money on a bag for their young daughter,” Glamour’s digital director Perrie Samotin says. “I’ve always coveted the backpack specifically, mostly for its perfectly slouchy construction, discreet logo plate, and chunky pockets. After months of stalking resale sites, I recently acquired the designer bag of my teenage dreams on Poshmark for a quarter of the original retail price, and probably an eighth of what the reissued version, available now, costs. I love that it’s simultaneously understated though so obviously classic Prada, and I use it almost daily. For work, it holds my thin laptop perfectly and for weekends it holds my toddler’s snacks (and mine). A true icon!”
Best Hobo: Saint Laurent Small Le 5 à 7 Bag
Saint Laurent Small Le 5 à 7 Bag
Net-a-Porter
Saks Fifth Avenue
“Saint Laurent makes classic investment accessories that look good and age even better,” says Rae Ann Herman, style market director at Oprah Daily. “I love anything with a ’70s vibe, and I always love suede, so I’ve been wanting this hobo bag. It comes in a large size, but this smaller one is also roomy enough for my essentials and fits over my shoulder. I imagine wearing it with white jeans and a chunky camel turtleneck.”
Best Newcomer: Marge Sherwood Large Bag
Marge Sherwood Brown Large Bag
Ssense
Behind the brand: Named after Gwyneth Paltrow’s character in The Talented Mr. Ripley, the Korean brand takes its influence from ’90s minimalism.
Known for: Architectural bags with exaggerated handle drops; its hobo bags are modern classics among fashion-minded city-dwellers.
Since 2016, Marge Sherwood has been putting out effortlessly cool handbags—and this shoulder bag might just be its most iconic. “It’s compact and easy to carry, but also large enough to fit essentials like my wallet, sunglasses, keys, lippy, and hand sanitizer,” says Hannah Malach, a senior news writer at WWD, who loves that the long strap doesn’t slip off of her shoulder. “It’s the perfect staple handbag. It goes with many different outfits and styles, and at a reasonable price.”
Best for Summer: Loewe Small Basket Bag
Loewe Small Basket Bag
Net-a-Porter
Bergdorf Goodman
Is it even summer without a raffia bag in tow? “As soon as temperatures start to rise, I reach for my Loewe basket,” says Elizabeth Toal, a freelance fashion editor and stylist. “It is the perfect bag; It goes from day to night, week to weekend! It’s large enough to hold my everyday essentials, plus sunscreen and a book for a trip to the beach. Unlike most straw totes, the straps are adjustable allowing it to sling over my shoulder or nestle in the crook of my arm.”
Best Under $500: Kate Spade Suite Large Work Tote
Kate Spade Suite Large Work Tote
Kate Spade
Behind the brand: Since debuting in 1993 with six handbags, the brand (founded by former accessories editor Kate Spade) has since become a household fashion name.
Known for: A wide range of handbags, ranging from its iconic nylon totes (the Sam is the style that started it all) to whimsical novelty designs to versatile work bags, like the one featured here.
“You can never go wrong with a tote bag,” says Ashley Afriyie, stylist and fashion brand consultant. “For me, it’s one of the most practical styles in the handbag category. As someone always on the go, I need a bag that will carry my laptop but also function as a chic accessory to complete my look. This Kate Spade bag acts as both—and doesn’t break the bank.”
Best for Travel: Longchamp Épure North/South Leather Top Handle Tote
Longchamp Épure North/South Leather Top Handle Tote
Nordstrom
Behind the brand: Founded in 1948 by Jean Cassegrain, this French brand has specialized in artisanally-made leather goods for nearly 80 years. Still family-owned, Longchamp has expanded into ready-to-wear, shoes, and opticals, over the years; however, the handbags remain the best-loved items.
Known for: The nylon Pliage tote has become a best-seller, popular due to the weather-resistant fabrication and affordable price point, while leather goods, like the one seen here, remain top favorites.
“Although the brand is more prominently known for it’s timeless, celeb (and royal) beloved tote bag, which is also great for laptop toting to the office, I love just how lightweight and versatile this little equestrian number is. It perfectly fits my phone, and other essentials, and goes with just about everything, making it especially great for travel. I’ve had mine for two years and although there’s a little wear on the strap, the quality is basically as good as the day she was born,” says Glamour commerce director Brie Schwartz.
Best Under $1,000: Tory Burch Romy Tote
Tory Burch Romy Tote
Tory Burch
Behind the brand: Tory Burch spans a vast array of ready-to-wear, accessories, and home decor. While it has long been known for its monogram accessories, the brand has been on a recent high-fashion roll, becoming one of the premier runway shows at New York Fashion Week.
Known for: The Ella tote, which comes in various sizes and fabrics (leather, printed nylon, raffia), among many other signature styles.
“On a recent (and very long) weekend, I discovered that this easygoing tote is pretty much the perfect day bag,” says Glamour commerce editor Jake Henry Smith. “I needed something that could help me carry a laptop, a notebook, a novel, a water bottle, and a bunch of random smaller essentials across three subway lines and one Amtrak trip—and then do the entire thing in reverse. The Romy helped me do it both comfortably and with style. The spacious, suede-lined interior includes one side pocket and can handle a heavy load. I love the pebbled leather exterior, which hides scruffs. (Leave the suede and the spazzolato to the people who don’t take public transportation; this is a working woman’s bag.) The straps could be a little easier to adjust, meaning they mostly function as decoration, but that’s my only gripe—this is a lovely workhorse-slash-investment piece.” (Check out our edit of best men’s bags here.)
Best Lightweight: ATP Eraclea Shoulder Bag
ATP Eraclea Shoulder Bag
Revolve
Behind the brand: Founded in 2011 by Maj-La Pizzelli and Jonas Clason, ATP Atelier first began with a minimalist, leather sandal, and quickly expanded to handbags and other leather goods over the years. They are known for impeccable craftsmanship and clean designs, made to be worn over and over.
Known for: Although the brand story started with a sandal, their line of modern handbags, like the Silea shoulder bag, are all crafted in Tuscany, Italy, using time-honored, artisanal techniques.
“I have been using this ATP Atelier Eraclea shoulder bag nonstop,” says fashion consultant Chantal Hughes, who loves the roominess and the lightness of this tote. “I don’t like to change out my bags often so this is a game changer for me,” she says. “I can put so many items in it for work and when I’m out with my children, it looks chic, but it also comes with this beautiful, leather pouch that is detachable. It’s like getting two-for-one!” She applauds the versatility, and likes that it can be styled just as easily with denim and T-shirts, as a suit or dress.
Best Woven: Ulla Johnson Charlotte Woven Leather Tote Bag
Ulla Johnson Charlotte Woven Leather Tote Bag
Neiman Marcus
Bergdorf Goodman
Behind the brand: Ulla Johnson launched her eponymous brand in New York City in 1998. The line of ready-to-wear and accessories focuses on artisanal production and craft, all inspired by the designer’s love for travel.
Known for: The handbag category has become fast, customer favorites since its introduction in 2013. Styles like the Alma, an everyday tote in leather, and raffia bags, such as the Gio, offer practicality, with a stylish twist.
“I first fell in love with Ulla Johnson handbags when I got my hands on this cylindrical, open-top tote a couple seasons ago, and I get so many compliments on it—it’s definitely the most stylish bag I used to tote my laptop around in,” says Glamour contributor and Ça Marche founder Laura Lajiness Kaupke. “After seeing these saddle brown, woven styles on the runway, I knew I had to add to my collection this year. It’s just detailed enough to make it feel special, but still perfectly practical for everyday use.”
Best Canvas Tote: Dior Trotter Canvas Book Tote Large
Dior Pre-Loved Burgundy Trotter Canvas Book Tote Large
Amazon
Behind the brand: The Parisian-based fashion house was founded in 1946, with the debut of Christian Dior’s the “New Look,” and still remains one of the most desirable, luxury brands in history, currently helmed by Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri.
Known for: The Lady Dior bag and the Saddle bag, both launched in the 1990s, are two renowned handbag shapes that still remain iconic symbols of the Dior legacy, and continue to captivate fashion enthusiasts worldwide
“I love the Book Tote because it works for almost any occasion—running errands around town, transporting your laptop for the office commute, or as a super chic travel bag,” says fashion stylist and consultant MaryKate Boylan. The sturdy, canvas tote was introduced into the brand’s offerings in 2018, and has remained a constant, reinterpreted seasonally in a bevy of embroideries, patterns, and sizes. It’s a go-to for many who want a hardworking handbag, with that slight, designer flair.
Best Nylon: Prada Tessuto Re-Edition 2000 Hobo Mini

Saks Fifth Avenue
“I love a nylon bag, purely for its practicality,” says Kristina Rutkowski, a freelance fashion editor and writer. “Whatever season it may be, nylon fabrication works, since it’s water repellent and lightweight. This easy shoulder bag from Prada has been high on my wishlist for a long time. It’s a classic shape that has all the right nostalgic nods, yet still feels entirely modern. I am a big second hand shopper, too, so I like that you can find it on vintage platforms, as well as brand-new, depending on your preference.”
Best Leather: Alaïa Click E/W Medium Leather Shoulder Bag
ALAÏA Black ‘Le Click’ East West Medium Bag
Net-a-Porter
Mytheresa
Ssense
Behind the brand: The Parisian couture house was founded by Tunisian designer Azzedine Alaïa in 1964, gaining global acclaim for its intricate, form-fitting garments and luxurious accessories. Today, creative director Pieter Mulier continues to honor the brand’s legacy, while bringing a unique, modern edge.
Known for: Infamous shapes like Le Cœur bag and Le Teckel bag have earned worldwide acclaim, thanks to impeccable craftsmanship and the most luxurious, leather fabrications.
“Alaïa has been super consistent with their handbag offerings, as of late,” says Kia Goosby, market editor at Vanity Fair. “Le Teckel bag has had a cult following and has inspired iterations from other brands, but the new Alaïa bag that has my heart is the Click E/W Medium bag. I remember seeing the larger version at the Spring collection re-see back in September and instantly fell in love with its unique design and curved silhouette that tucks perfectly underneath your shoulder, lightly hugging the body. The larger version is super fab, but the medium is a great size to go from day to night. I am excited to experience summer with this bag in tow.”
Best Celeb-Approved: Aupen Nirvana Buckle Bag
