If you binge-watched all of Dying for Sex over the weekend, you’ll know that the FX on Hulu dramedy follows Michelle Williams‘s Molly on a raunchy quest to find emotional healing through sex. After learning that she is dying of cancer, Molly decides to dedicate what’s left of her life to exploring her latent sexuality in the hopes of finally achieving a real orgasm with another person.
**Spoilers for Dying for Sex, now streaming on Hulu**
Over the course of Dying for Sex‘s eight half-hour episodes, Molly has an awkward hookup-gone-wrong with Marcello Hernandez, gets into animal and urine play with “Pet” (Conrad Ricamora), and eventually falls in love with her initially repulsive Neighbor (Rob Delaney). But the partner you might never be able to forget might just be Wall Street bro Hooper (Zack Robidas), aka the guy with the beautiful penis who was into penis humiliation.
Molly initially finds Hooper on a kinky dating site in the hopes of pursuing her interest in topping. Before they have sex, Molly seems totally unfazed by his desire to have her insult his penis. Should be easy, right? However, when he’s finally naked, our girl is taken aback by how beautiful it is.
Dying for Sex‘s script goes so far as to compare Hooper’s penis to a secret waterfall and it makes a whimsical reappearance during one of Molly’s deathbed hallucinations.
This Dying for Sex full frontal nude moment left us wondering…how did executive producers Kim Rosenstock and Liz Meriwether go about casting a role like that??
“What’s funny is I think he’s like a classically trained actor, like I feel like he’s done like a lot of Shakespeare,” Rosenstock said, giggling. “We look for a great performer.”
“I mean, it’s a prosthetic,” Meriwether said, cutting to the chase.
“Oh, yeah. We should be clear,” Rosenstock confirmed.
“Yeah, no. I mean, he’s an incredible actor and we were just honestly like so lucky with the cast, because everybody had this amazing ability to be both heartwarming and hilarious,” Meriwether said. “I feel like Zack is a great example of that.”
Meriwether then went on to reveal that the “waterfall” descriptor came after the writers saw the prosthetic that production artists came up with.
“I actually think we came up with the joke about the waterfall after we saw the penis prosthetic,” she said. “Because I think we were reacting to what we were working with, essentially.”
“It was inspired by the prosthetic,” Rosenstock said.
Meriwether went on to share that the “whole process of nudity and prosthetics” was “really new” to her, coming off of network TV like New Girl.
“We had a lot of fun production meetings,” Rosenstock said, nodding.
“A lot of really fun production meetings,” Meriwether said, laughing.
“A lot of really specific details, a lot of fun emails,” Rosenstock said.
“Yeah, reference photos,” Meriwether said. “It was a whole thing.”
A whole thing to arrive at a beautiful thing.
