REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. (WHNT) — In the first four months of 2025, Redstone Arsenal Police report a sharp increase in the number of people attempting to bring guns on Redstone Arsenal, despite a strict no weapons policy.
News 19 spoke with Redstone Arsenal Police Chief James Lamm, who said, “last year we had 45 weapons enter the Arsenal, this year we’re already currently at 37.”
Chief Lamm wants to remind people that weapons are not allowed on the arsenal. He said that there are steep consequences for bringing a gun on post.
“If a weapon is discovered, they will detain you,” Lamm said. “They will call law enforcement, law enforcement will show up at the gate, finish the inspection, they will take the weapon and have it as evidence.”
“The individual will be arrested and transported to the police station on Gray and Patton Road, building 3623, to be processed,” he said. “They will receive a citation for a mandatory court appearance for a security violation.”
The chief said that in 2024, Redstone Arsenal Police arrested 45 people for bringing a weapon on post. However, only four months into 2025, Police have already intercepted 37 weapons.
These numbers are way up from previous years. According to the Army, there were only four arrests for unregistered firearms in the Fiscal Year of 2022. It reported 17 in 2023.
In 2023, the State of Alabama enacted an open-carry gun law. However, Lamm said that the law does not apply on military installations, such as Redstone Arsenal.
Lamm said the increase is concerning, but he doesn’t necessarily believe open carry is tied to it.
“I believe it’s the uptick of crime off of the installation,” he said. “People feel a necessity to carry a weapon.”
The Chief also said that the number of people entering the arsenal each day is above pre-COVID numbers. He told News 19 that the arsenal recently peaked at 48,000 people entering per day.
With more people entering the arsenal each day, that could lead to more people intentionally or unintentionally bringing a gun on post..
To help combat this, Redstone has added more signage both on and off the arsenal, reminding people of the no weapons policy. Chief Lamm said Redstone Arsenal Police also sends weekly emails to the dozens of organizations that have a presence on Redstone Arsenal, reminding them of the policy.
