LAWRENCE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office said crews worked to rescue a woman and two kids from rising floodwaters Sunday evening.
Around 7:30 p.m., Lawrence County 911 said it received a call reporting a vehicle had been swept off the roadway by floodwaters with a woman and two small children inside it. The caller said the woman and children were able to climb onto the roof of the vehicle to escape from the rising waters.
The Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office said its Swift Water Rescue Team and Courtland Fire & Rescue were called to the scene. Upon arrival, LCSO said first responders found several “good smaritans” on site with a flat-bottom boat trying to reach the stranded family.
LCSO Swift Water Rescue Technicians and firefighters quickly joined the rescue effort by deploying throw ropes and coordinating with the bystanders.
Once responders reached the vehicle, LCSO said they fitted the woman and two children with life jackets and safely transferred them into the flat-bottom boat. The group was then pulled to safety.
All three were evaluated by Lawrence County EMS on scene and are expected to be okay.
We want to thank the brave citizens who stepped up to help, and commend the teamwork between our deputies, firefighters, and EMS personnel. This successful rescue is a reminder of the dangers of floodwaters—please remember, Turn Around, Don’t Drown.
