HUNTSVILLE, Ala (WHNT) — Wing lovers will get a chance to test some tasty ones for a good cause this weekend in the Rocket City.
The 16th annual Battle of the Buffalo is set to hit Big Spring Park on April 12 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Local restaurants and amateur cooks will enter wings in the competition to be judged by a panel of key individuals from the Huntsville/Madison County Area.
The University of Alabama in Huntsville said the event served as the largest chicken wing festival in the southeast. All proceeds from the event go to cancer research.
UAH said that one ticket will net visitors 12 wings and a drink, with the wings cooked by local restaurants and individual teams all vying to be named the Best Wings in Huntsville.
The event was founded by the brothers of the Theta Pi Chapter of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity at UAH in 2008 to honor their brother Paul “Fish” Salmon, who died of leukemia. Salmon was a lover of chicken wings, and his brothers channeled that love into a way to honor him.
UAH said all proceeds from the event support Clearview Cancer Institute and HudsonAlpha Institute of Biotechnology. The university said the event has raised over $400,000 over the last 16 years.
“Last round, with the help of our generous restaurants and sponsors, Battle of the Buffalo brought together more than 8,000 community members, served over 11,000 pounds of chicken wings, and presented the Russel Hill Cancer Foundation with $78,000 and The HudsonAlpha Foundation with $34,000,” the event website said.
On top of the wing festival, the Salmon 5k run will also be held in downtown Huntsville starting at 9 a.m. on April 12.
