Pasadena | $1.895 million
A Streamline Moderne house built in 1938, on 0.1 acres
This three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bathroom house sits in the Poppy Peak Hills section of Pasadena, a five-minutes drive from Lower Arroyo Park. The architect, William Kesling, worked extensively in Los Angeles in the first half of the 1930s, building Streamline Moderne homes in neighborhoods like Los Feliz and Silver Lake. His designs are admired, but the architect’s star dimmed after pleading guilty to fraud.
Old Pasadena, one of the city’s main shopping and dining hubs, is 10 minutes away by car, as is the campus of Caltech. Griffith Park takes 15 minutes and downtown Los Angeles takes 20.
Size: 2,106 square feet
Price per square foot: $900
Indoors: A garage at street level has interior steps and an exterior staircase, both leading to the top floor and the main living areas. Updates to the house include new plumbing and wiring. The roof holds a set of solar panels.
At the top of the outdoor stairs, one door opens directly to the kitchen and another to the living room, which has parquet wood floors and windows with treetop views. A fireplace with a brown tile surround is built into a corner of the living room, and next to it are windows that face a walled garden.
Between the living room and a galley kitchen is a dining area with a door to a large terrace. The kitchen has a gas cooktop, a wall oven, a backsplash with white tile and black trim, and a skylight. There’s a half bathroom off the kitchen.
From the living room, stairs lead down to the middle level of the house, where all three bedrooms are. One side of this floor is occupied by the primary suite, big enough for a king-size bed and a sitting area. A large walk-in closet is between the bedroom and the bathroom, which has a double vanity.
There are two bedrooms at the other side of this level, along with another full bathroom, this one with a walk-in shower and built-in cabinets. A door at the end of the hall opens to a small terrace, and the lowest level of the house holds the garage, more storage space and an equipped laundry room.
Outdoor space: In classic Streamline Moderne style, the home’s top-floor patio was designed to evoke the bow of a ship, with metal railings and cover in the form of a roof overhang. Terraced gardens lining one side of the house are framed by rock walls and planted with succulents, with space for lounge chairs on two levels. The garage holds two cars.
