Officers fatally shot a man in San Bernardino after he allegedly tried to kill a juvenile boy, police confirmed Sunday.
The San Bernardino Police Department said it was 5:32 p.m. when dispatch received a domestic disturbance call in the 1000 Block of North Mountain View Avenue.
Police said it was a relative who called in to report that the suspect was threatening to kill his juvenile son.
KTLA reached out to the department, asking to clarify whether the juvenile was the caller’s son or the suspect’s son, but did not immediately hear back.
“Dispatch received additional calls from uninvolved citizens reporting that an adult male was armed with a knife and chasing a juvenile in the street,” said the department’s release.
Initial reports said officers arrived and found the armed man who was described in the call. The suspect was not publicly identified as of Sunday evening.
Despite giving multiple commands and pleading with the suspect to drop the knife, police said the man refused to comply.
Then, officers purportedly tried several de-escalation methods, such as using a Taser and “less-lethal” bean bag rounds, but the suspect continued to ignore and actively resist all commands.
Instead, police said the suspect began swinging the knife and tried to run back toward the home.
It was at this point when officers opened fire on the suspect.
“Following the incident, officers recovered the knife and immediately began administering lifesaving measures while paramedics were en route,” said the release.
The suspect was taken to a local hospital, where officials said he was later pronounced dead.
