HBO‘s The White Lotus Season 3 finally comes to an end tonight, in a ninety-minute-long finale ominously titled “Amor Fati,” meaning a love of one’s own fate. Two characters who seem both deeply in love with each other and in love with the idea of fate are Rick (Walton Goggins) and Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood). Rick believes that his entire life was locked into a path of pain when his father was murdered when he was still a baby, while Chelsea clings to astrology, Buddhism, and a cosmic trust that Rick is her soulmate.
When White Lotus star Aimee Lou Wood stopped by DECIDER HQ last week, we asked her how she felt about where Rick and Chelsea’s fates brought them in the Season 3 finale. Apparently, the more Wood thinks about the ending White Lotus creator/writer/director Mike White crafted for this season, the more “conflicted” she feels.
“I felt very at peace with it while I was doing it and then as time’s gone on and I’ve processed it, I don’t,” Wood said. “The feelings have got more complicated.”
“I think because I had ‘Chelsea goggles’ on, everything was actually, in a way, simpler because I just had to fully invest in her frame of mind, which is incredibly tunnel vision,” she continued. “Since having separation from her, I’m like, ‘Oh, well, wait a sec. Wait a sec.’ I’m seeing things more clearly and I feel now conflicted and I think that everyone’s gonna feel quite, it’s quite controversial.”
Aimee Lou Wood isn’t the first White Lotus star to warn DECIDER that Season 3 might have a “more provocative” ending than seasons past. Jason Isaacs called the finale “profound” and “more emotional” than fans might be expecting.
DECIDER asked Wood if she agreed with her co-star’s description and she did.
“I think it’s really profound. I think it’s actually a lot more emotional and sad than others have been,” Wood said. “I think Mike â there’s some scenes in eight that I just think are so tender â and so that Mike’s kind of showing his more sensitive, tender side.”
“Like, I feel like a lot of the final episodes of White Lotus tend to have these, you know it’s so exciting, but there’s a new layer of kind of, I don’t know, just sensitivity and profundity.”
Over the course of our long-ranging conversation with Wood, the actress also teased that “a lot happens” in The White Lotus Season 3 Episode 8.
“It’s ninety minutes long and there’s still so much story left,” she said. “It is going to surprise people.”
So buckle up and make sure to tune in to The White Lotus Season 3 finale tonight, April 6, at 9 PM ET on both HBO and MAX.
