James Bond might have some toxic traits, but it appears that Pierce Brosnan is a feminist.

After most recently starring together in Guy Ritchie’s MobLand, new episodes streaming Sundays on Paramount+, the Bond veteran agreed with co-star Helen Mirren‘s critique that the 007 franchise is “drenched and born out of profound sexism.”

“Yes, there’s a certain agreement there,” Brosnan told People. “But there’s a certain world and room to move within the proscenium arch of what [Bond creator and author] Ian Fleming put down. So there’s always going to be conflict.”

Brosnan starred as the MI6 agent in GoldenEye (1995), Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), The World Is Not Enough (1999) and Die Another Day (2002).

Mirren, who plays London crime family matriarch Maeve Harrigan in MobLand, previously prefaced that she’s “a massive fan” of her onscreen husband Bronsan, before telling The Standard that the 007 franchise “was not my thing.”

“It really wasn’t. I never liked James Bond. I never liked the way women were in James Bond,” explained Mirren. “The whole concept of James Bond is drenched and born out of profound sexism. Women have always been a major and incredibly important part of the Secret Service, they always have been. And very brave. If you hear about what women did in the French Resistance, they’re amazingly, unbelievably courageous. So I would tell real stories about extraordinary women who’ve worked in that world.”

Brosnan previously commented on the new 007 partnership between Amazon MGM Studios and returning producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, saying he wishes “them all well.”

After announcing that Amy Pascal and David Heyman will produce the next film in the franchise, Amazon MGM’s Courtenay Valenti and Sue Kroll said at CinemaCon on Friday that the pair of “filmmaking legends” is currently in London working on the film.

“We are committed to honoring the legacy of this iconic character, while bringing a fresh, exhilarating new chapter to audiences around the world alongside Amy and David,” said Valenti, head of Film, Streaming and Theatrical. “They are both in London getting started and couldn’t be here tonight, but we wanted to thank them for what we know will be an incredible partnership. Thank you, Amy and David!”
