Though they found it funny at first, an Orange County family is now trying to get Amazon’s attention, hoping to stop a continuous inflow of mysterious packages arriving at their doorstep.
David Lopez said the packages, usually full of dresses, started arriving one or two at a time at his mother’s Santa Ana home in January.
“We currently have over 50, and we have six more on the way,” said Lopez. “Some are very pretty, some are not so pretty.”
Lopez told KTLA’s Angeli Kakade that at first, his mother was confused, not having ordered the dresses and even asking neighbors to help find their owner.
“Now it’s just kind of clogging their front doorstep every time they open the door every morning that there’s new packages,” said Lopez
Lopez and his partner, Julian Guzman, said they have been trying reach Amazon regarding the unwanted mail.
“I feel like some kind of e-commerce wasteland where the Amazon seller doesn’t want to deal with the shipping and handling of these returns,” said Guzman.
However, Lopez thinks the packages are part of an insurance fraud scheme.
“They’re trying to say that they never received the package so that they can claim something with Amazon,” guessed Lopez.
Amazon said in a statement to KTLA: “We’re looking into this and will work directly with the customer to find a resolution.”
Meanwhile, Lopez and Guzman are trying to turn their odd situation into something good
“We wanna put them in a garment bag and then donate them to local organizations,” explained Guzman.
They also said they want to share their story so people know what they can do if a mysterious package ends up on your doorstep.
“Hope that this kind of educates people a little bit in the dangers of this type of thing, especially with fraud or you know opening packages that don’t belong to you because there could be greater risks at some point,” said Lopez.
