The MLB trade deadline is months away, but it is already shaping up to be packed with action. While there aren’t many teams that will clearly be selling yet, there are a lot of teams that need to buy. The Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds, and Baltimore Orioles are three of the more desperate teams in the league, but which players are going to be available for trade?
Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller recently listed Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcántara as one of the best trade chips on the trade market this season.
“From 2019-22, only a handful of pitchers were more valuable than Alcántara,” Miller wrote. “And even in what was a ‘down’ year for him in 2023, he was still worth either 3.0 WAR or 3.9 WAR, depending on whether you prefer FanGraphs or Baseball Reference.
“If he’s on track for something in that range while re-emerging as the rubber-armed ace of yore, there will be a long list of teams mighty interested in acquiring him and his absolute bargain of a remaining contract, owed $55M through the end of 2027.”
Alcántara is going to be the top name on the market this summer. He’s a Cy Young caliber pitcher with multiple more seasons of team control left on his contract. The Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees, and New York Mets all make sense as potential suitors.
The two New York teams have massive gaps in their starting rotations. Multiple Mets players have already spoken out about how beneficial an Alcántara trade would be for New York.
Baltimore needs an ace and it has the prospect capital to make a deal for the righty. The Red Sox are in the same boat as the Orioles.
