Flooding associated with an ongoing atmospheric river is expected to worsen into the weekend, putting millions of people at risk of flood-related impact, including some celebrities.
Why It Matters
AccuWeather meteorologists this week warned of a 1-in-1,000-year flood posing threats to several states. An AccuWeather spokesperson told Newsweek that floods like this have a 0.1 percent chance of happening in any given year.
Flood watches and warnings are in place across multiple states, including in Nashville, Tennessee, which is a celebrity hotspot, especially for country music singers.
What To Know
As of Friday afternoon, flood-related weather alerts were in place for more than a dozen states in the Midwest and South. The alerts include flood watches, flood warnings and flash flood warnings.
Some National Weather Service (NWS) offices, including in Nashville, warned of “major flooding.”
Where Will Flooding Occur?
Dangerous floods are forecast to occur in several states, including Tennessee, Arkansas, Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, among others. Nearly all of Indiana and Ohio are a flood watch, including Bath, Ohio. NBA star LeBron James has property in Bath.
Singer-songwriter John Mellencamp reportedly owns property in Bloomington, Indiana. The Southern Indiana city is also under a flood watch through Sunday morning.
Nashville Flooding
Nashville is among eight climate sites that could break four-day rainfall records this week. NWS Weather Prediction Center senior branch forecaster Brian Hurley told Newsweek that the four-day rainfall record for Nashville is 13.57 inches. The forecast with the ongoing storm is 8.22 inches. Although the forecast is below the record, Hurley said “anything within a couple inches is fair game.”
“All we need to do is have some of these heavier rain bands shift,” Hurley said.
Celebrities that reportedly own property in Nashville include Taylor Swift, Dolly Parton, Reese Witherspoon, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Billy Ray Cyrus, Keith Urban, Nicole Kidman, Bill Belichick and many more.
NWS meteorologists forecast that 3 to 4 inches of additional rainfall was expected to impact Nashville, with more than 6 inches possible in some areas.
What People Are Saying
NWS Nashville, in a Friday forecast: “Major flooding is possible for northwest Middle Tennessee through Sunday. Rain and thunderstorms will continue to impact the area, and significant flooding is expected to occur.”
NWS Little Rock, Arkansas, in a flood watch: “Excessive runoff from an extremely rare multi-day heavy rainfall event is expected to result in the flooding of rivers, creeks, steams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Extensive rare, and at times catastrophic, flash flooding is likely if forecast rainfall totals are realized. Flash flood water levels may reach areas that rarely or have never flooded before in addition to the threat faced by low-lying areas. The potential for rare flash flooding may pose a significant threat to life and property.”
What Happens Next
Most flood watches are expected to remain in place through Sunday morning. However, rivers could remain flooded into early next week as it will take time for water to recede.
