Fans of mother and father Jason Ritter and Melanie Lynskey, listen up. A crossover is coming.
After a failed attempt to bring Ritter into Yellowjackets — he was originally set to guest star in Season 2, only to have his role cut — fans have been desperate to see the real-life husband and wife work together again. It sounds like we might be getting close.
Talking with Decider at PaleyFest LA, Ritter shared that he is well into the process of getting his Matlock cast and crew members on board to bring Lynskey in for a part. As for when exactly it will happen, that part is still up in the air, but he feels pretty confident about the prospect.
“Anytime,” he said of when the world will see Lynskey on the show. “I’ve passed the word on. I would love to see that and Melanie would love it. Everybody who works on Matlock would love that, too. So I think when all the pieces are aligned.”
Ritter added, “I think we can call it inevitable.”
The pair first met on the set of 2013’s The Big Ask and began dating shortly after. Since then, they have starred in two more films together, tied the knot, welcomed a daughter, and landed their own successful TV shows, both of which stream on Paramount+. Additionally, both actors are slated to appear in Season 2 of Rian Johnson and Peacock‘s Poker Face.
On Saturday, Decider spoke with Lynskey at the PaleyFest panel for Poker Face and asked her for her thoughts on a Matlock guest role. She agreed with her husband and added that she is just waiting for them to pitch a script to her and for schedules to work out. The New Zealand-born actress also said her only stipulation is that she needs to have a scene with Kathy Bates.
In Matlock, Ritter plays Julian Markston, a senior partner at the law firm where Madeline “Matty” Matlock (Bates) gets a job to find out who is responsible for her daughter’s death. Lynskey explained that she has always viewed Bates as the gold standard for acting and is No. 1 on her co-star bucket list. So if they can get them together, she is in. And what about her hubby?
“Sure, him too,” she joked, adding that he’s not her top priority since they live together, see each other daily, and have worked together before.
Matlock producers, it’s time to use Bates as bait!
Catch up on the first season of Matlock on Paramount+ now. New episodes air Thursdays on CBS and stream the next day online.
