Jason Momoa has officially confirmed his return to the Dune franchise. The 45-year-old actor recently appeared on the TODAY show in an interview with Craig Melvin. Momoa, who played swordmaster Duncan Idaho in 2021’s Dune, is now making a comeback for Dune: Messiah.

In the first film, Momoa’s character Duncan Idaho dies in the film and did not appear in 2024’s Dune: Part Two. Melvin pointed out that in the original Frank Herbert six-part Dune book series that was published in 1965 and 1985, Duncan is expected to resurrect in the form of a clone. Momoa confirmed, “Well, I’m not sure if I’m going to get in trouble or not, but it’s the same thing like ‘Game of Thrones’, you know what I mean? If you didn’t read the books, it’s not my fault, right? Yeah, there’s going to be…I’m going to be coming back. I’m making a comeback. You heard it first, right here with you, baby.” He later joked, “You got me in trouble!”

Director Denis Villeneuve spoke to Deadline last October and commented on the return of the main cast that includes Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh and Anya Taylor-Joy, “They have to return. They are with the main cast when it happens. And more worms. What can I say?” He noted that the third film will be “something completely different” and “takes place like 12 years after where we left the characters at the end of Part Two. Their journey, their story is different this time, and that’s why I always say that while it’s the same world it’s a new film with new circumstances.”

Dune: Messiah is expected to release in 2026.
