ATHENS, Ala (WHNT) — Dogs of different breeds and ages lined the crates of Limestone Veterinary Clinic Thursday.
The influx of animals came after an Athens couple was arrested and charged with 38 counts of animal cruelty and neglect on Monday.
“It’s surprising to find someone that’s cruel to animals like that,” said Larry Carwhile.
Athens Police said they searched the house on Lindsay Lane for signs of a “commercial dog breeding operation” after receiving a call about an odor coming from the house.
Carwhile lives down the road and said he was shocked to learn of the charges
“That’s unbelievable… around here in Limestone county, you know, I’ve never heard of it around here,” he said.
Limestone Veterinary Clinic owner and Doctor Elisabeth O’Connor said most of the animals are a mixture of poodles, cavaliers, and pekingese…along with two cats.
“They’re getting spayed and neutered and groomed as necessary,” said Dr. O’Connor. “So, they’re all absolutely delightful animals, and they deserve a fantastic home.”
While they are encouraging the community to adopt their animals both new and old, they are also asking for the community’s help as well.
“If you’re a groomer and you’re interested in helping, if you just want to come and play with the dogs and help get them socialized, that would be fantastic… take them for walks and things like that,” she said.
The animals will be ready for adoption as early as next week.
Dr. O’Connor also wants to remind the community that there are animals at the Limestone Veterinary clinic that have been there for weeks and deserve a loving home as well! If you are interested in filling out an adoption application, you can do so at the link on their website.
